Perhaps your grandmother told you stories of bending over a washboard, scrubbing clothes by hand, rinsing them, and hanging them to dry on the clothesline. In those days, it seems a woman must have had to spend a couple of days doing laundry for the family. Times have changed, and one of the best appliances ever made is the washing machine. Few families today can imagine not having their clothes washed for them in these convenient machines. When you're choosing your first clothes washer, the tips below will help you make the right choice for your needs. 

CAPACITY

You can buy washers in every size: compact/portable, standard, large, extra-large, and super capacity machines. Capacity is measured according to the size of the tub. Each machine holds a certain amount of laundry based on the tub¡¯s capacity. The most popular type of machine is the top-loader, and it¡¯s the one that¡¯s been used by more people over the years. Manufacturers are now making more front-loading models, which are great because even though they cost more, they will put money back into your pocket since they use less detergent and less water than their cousin top-loaders. They also turn the clothes to clean them, rather than having an agitator that rubs the clothes against it. This means your clothes will last longer, and it means there is space in the drum that¡¯s not filled with an agitator, giving you more space for clothes. 

Most washers, except compact and portable machines, are about 25 inches wide and 27 inches deep. The largest machines may be up to two inches deeper than their smaller counterparts, so make sure to measure the space you have before purchasing your washing machine. The smallest machines allow you to store them and then move them to the sink, where you¡¯ll hook them up for washing. Stackable washers and dryers are great for homes with less space for laundry equipment. They are smaller than standard machines, so they hold less. 

Most single folks and couples can use a large machine. Small families will want an extra-large machine, and larger families can make good use of a super-large washer. Because larger models hold more items, including double bedspreads, they are great if you can afford them. These washers hold more water as well, and your clothes will get cleaner because the agitator has more room to move. Clothes need space to move while they¡¯re being washed, so keep that in mind when choosing your new machine. 

If the machine you want has a ¡°plus¡± label, you¡¯ll be able to wash about 15 pounds of clothes in one load. 

CYCLES 

At the low end of pricing scale, your washer will include three cycles: one for regular clothes, one for permanent press apparel and one for delicate clothing. With the twist of the knob, you can choose how long to wash your clothes. Some allow you to pick how fast the machine spins and the temperature of the water. 

As you move up the scale in price, you¡¯ll be amazed at the different cycles available, one for every conceivable type of washing situation you may encounter. Some machines feature as many as fourteen different cycles! Today¡¯s higher priced models have auto soak, extra rinse, wash and soak, and even hand wash cycles. Many also have dispensers for bleach and fabric softener. These are handy, because you won¡¯t have to pour these laundry aids in at different times during the cycle. You can choose the level of water, and this means you help the environment because you¡¯re only using the amount of water you actually need for the size load you¡¯re washing. When you wash clothes in cold water, the detergent may not dissolve completely. The higher end models make sure the temperature of the water allows powdered detergent to dissolve. 

OTHER FEATURES AND CONSIDERATIONS

Of course, the more expensive models also have electronic touch pads and so forth, making them perfect if you¡¯re into high-tech appliances. These pads can be seen at a greater distance. The disadvantage of electronic pads is that they cost much more to repair than mechanical knobs or push buttons. 

If you have small children, consider getting a machine with an additional safety lock. All machines now come with a feature that stops spinning if the lid is raised, but the extra lock will help you sleep better at night. 

Many utility companies offer rebates for machines that feature the U.S. Dept. of Energy Star label. These machines use less water and energy, allowing you to do your part in preserving our precious natural resources.  

Warranties for washers usually offer one-year parts and labor. You can buy an extended warranty if you like, but many consumer affairs experts don¡¯t believe that is necessary. 

PRICE

Of course, you¡¯re probably wondering how much you¡¯ll have to spend for a new washer. A simple top-loading machine may only run you about $250-350. If you look around and compare models, you may also be able to find a machine in this range that allows you to set water levels. 

As you increase in size, you¡¯ll pay more, anywhere from $600-800 for top-loaders. While the less expensive machines have porcelain tubs that may rust as time goes by, the more expensive machines may feature plastic tubs, which don¡¯t rust, but they can get discolored. The more you pay, the more features you get, including knobs with grips that are designed ergonomically. At the top end of the scale, you¡¯ll be able to purchase a machine with all the bells and whistles you can possibly use, the largest tubs that are made of stainless steel. The electronic controls even have icons and florescent read-outs. 

Front loader washers can cost as much as $1000, but remember that you¡¯ll decrease your utility bill by about $100 a year, so over time you¡¯ll save a lot of money in operating costs. 

Top loading washing machines require 120 volts, and front-loaders made in Europe need 240 volts of electricity. 

Before buying your machine, make sure to ask yourself questions about how much and what types of laundry you do each week, so you can better choose the correct machine for your needs. Plan to buy a larger machine if you¡¯ll be adding to your family. The extra features like hand-wash and extra spin time are important if you wash a lot of delicate clothing or if you need the extra time for heavy items like blankets and jackets. Extra long cycles are great for laundering those dirty clothes your children wear while playing sports like soccer and football. Plan to buy a clothes washer that will last for years. Think ahead. However, if you know you will never have children or lots of company, your first washer should be chosen with that in mind. There's no reason to spend extra money for a machine with features you don't need.

PLACEMENT

You should measure the space allowed for your washer to make sure it will fit in your laundry room, laundry closet, basement, garage or kitchen ¨C do this before you buy one. 

If your machine will be in the basement, you¡¯ll be glad you chose a model with extra lights. How you place your machine is important also. A top-loader lid may hit the wall if you put it against a side wall.

You¡¯ll be delighted to begin washing clothes in your new washer. It¡¯s important to spend some time planning for the machine, because you¡¯ll likely use it for a long time. If you buy a washing machine that¡¯s too small, you¡¯ll regret that decision for years. By taking into account your personal situation, you¡¯ll be much more likely to get the machine that¡¯s right for you. The ease and convenience of today's washers will make you wonder why you waited so long to buy your first washing machine.
