If you have ever lifted a window for a few seconds only to have it come crashing down to make you jump, be glad it didn't happen to one of the children. A double hung window has a crescent latch to keep the upper and lower window together, but this is not a safety latch. So if you want to protect yourself against someone breaking into your house, you need to install safety pins. That way, you can open a window at night for fresh air, but it will not open wide enough for someone to break in or to let kids out.
The first thing you need to do is close the window and secure the latch. Then tear off two pieces of masking tape and put one in the left corner of the inside sash and one on the right side of the inside sash. Now take a measuring tape and find the center of the corners to mark them with a pencil. When you use masking tape, it keeps the wood from splintering when you drill the holes.
Use an awl and a hammer to create an indentation on the marked spots on the tape corners. Now put the drill bit in just far enough so that the chuck will hold it secure. Make sure you don¡¯t drill through both sashes or the burglar will be able to remove the pins.
Measure the sashes with the drill bit and use a piece of masking tape to mark the bit. Then when you get to the mark on the bit, you will know not to drill deeper. Use two drill bits. One needs to be one-eighth and the other, five-sixteenths. Use the small drill bit first and then use the bigger drill bit. Drill it at a twenty degree angle.
Make sure you clean the hole by going in and out a few times after drilling. Always wear safety goggles when using the drill. You can remove the masking tape and check the holes for any rough edges. Use a wire cutter if you find any, and then take your shop vacuum to clean the hole and vacuum up all the dust made by the drill. Put soap on your pins and slide them in the hole. They need to be a little loose. Now adjust every window on the first two floors of the house in the same manner.
To install window cleats, make sure the window is high enough so children can¡¯t reach it. Cleats can be installed on the wall nearby or on the window frame. Measure six to twelve inches between the two cleats and mark with a pencil. Put a screw inside the cleat, and with a Phillips screw driver, fasten it into the mark on the wall. Do the same with the other cleat and then wrap the cord around the cleats to finish the job.
When you are done, visually inspect each window to be sure the pieces fit smoothly together. Then attempt to raise the windows to see if they stop as planned. When you are done, clean up any wood chips or shavings and put away the tools. Then you can rest easy, knowing that burglars will be unable to open your windows. |
