Deer are wild animals that are fascinating to watch.  Their dark eyes, innocent faces, white tails, and graceful leaps are captivating to both adults and children.  However, deer can be a nuisance around your yard and garden.  They tend to damage plants and eat the lovely vegetables that you carefully watered and weeded.  If you would like to protect your garden from deer, here are ten safe tips to discourage the visits of these grazing creatures.

Plants:  There are some species of plants that are a deterrent to deer because of their taste, texture or smell.  Some of these are flowers such as marigolds, astilbe, morning glory, buttercup, and foxglove.  Deer are also not fond of some herbs, i.e., rosemary and catmint. Mix these flowers and herbs between your vegetables or plant them as a border around your garden.  You can also create a natural fence of shrubs that are distasteful to deer.  Two of these shrubs are boxwood and forsythia.  Another option is to locate your garden near to trees that are unappealing to deer.  These include birch, crape myrtle, maple, and spruce.  If at all possible do not plant azaleas, rhododendrons, daylilies, hostas, or roses in your yard or near your garden.  These plants provide delicious meals for the deer family. 

Netting:  Most hardware stores sell sturdy plastic netting that is specially woven to keep deer from getting through to your vegetables.  Before you install the netting, drive sturdy stakes or poles into the ground around the perimeter of your garden.  Space them two feet apart and attach the netting to the stakes to make a netted fence.  The netted fence should be at least seven feet high to discourage deer from jumping over.

Organic Repellents: Spraying an area around your garden with a special organic odor-based repellent will also act as a deterrent for deer.  The spray is applied to bushes, grass, and trees close to the garden. The duration of the odor can range from many days to months.  Some organic repellents need reapplication after heavy rain.  Organic repellents are safe for animals and people because they are made from natural ingredients, i.e., peppermint oil. The manufacturer¡¯s label will tell you how much to spray, how often, and how many feet from the area you want to protect.

Electronic Deer Repellent: These repellents are mounted on posts.  They lure the deer with an attractive scent and then a mild, harmless shock is delivered.  The shock has less voltage than static electricity.  It has virtually no amperage and is safe for use around kids and pets.

Soap & Fabric Softener Sheets: Deer are deterred by unnatural, perfume smells.  Hang fabric softener sheets on the trees around your garden.  You can also poke holes in the bottom of Styrofoam cups, pull string through the holes and tie halves of bar soap in each cup.  Hang the cups upside down on the trees or shrubs near your garden.  Replace the softener sheets and soap after heavy rain. 

Noise: Loud noises generally scare deer away.  Hang aluminum pie pans or any other noisemakers around your garden area.  The noisemakers should be tied in pairs to create a clanging noise when they are rustled by the wind.  A group of wind chimes, or a battery-operated radio can also help to startle deer. 

Lights: Deer are usually seen early in the morning or at twilight.  Installing bright lights around the perimeter of the garden will discourage deer.  Program the lights to turn on during the early morning hours and just before dark.  

Pets: Dogs not only make great pets but they are also useful for scaring deer away from your property.  If possible, have the doghouse near to your garden.  Dogs enjoy chasing deer and frightening them with their loud barks.

Sprinklers: Installing sprinklers that are timed to turn on at twilight and early morning will startle deer.  Some companies manufacture motion sensitive sprinkler systems that are specifically designed for deer.  The sprinklers are activated as soon as movement is detected. 

Fencing:  If you have tried everything and the deer seem to be winning the battle, install an eight-foot high wire mesh fence around your garden.  Although this is the most expensive way to protect your garden from deer, it is the most durable.  A mesh fence will last for years and will keep determined deer away from your garden.
