You can reupholster a piece of furniture for a lot less money than you'd pay to have it done professionally. Depending on the piece of furniture, the job may be difficult or easy. 

There are many different kinds of furniture to discuss, but in any case, this article will deal with a recliner, specifically. All recliners are different to some degree. Instead of focusing on a certain type of recliner, this article will function as a general guide to getting the job done. 

A popular way to reupholster a recliner is to take sequential photos as you work. Use a Polaroid or digital camera to see your photos instantly. It is so helpful to take photos, because recliners have many layers to work through, and it's easy to lose track of them, and how they reassemble. 

Here are the tools that you will need to complete this job:

You will want a heavy-duty stapler. Use a manual, electric, or air type, all are fine. Make sure that your staples are thick and long enough to handle the job. 

Recliners have a lot of staples in them, and some are tough and hard to get at. Obtain a strong staple puller to strip the existing fabric and materials inside the recliner. You may also find that a pair of pliers are useful. 

You will also want a pair of upholstery shears. These will work much better than the typical scissors. 10" is a good size. 

You will also need a tape measure to measure your fabric, and a screwdriver may come in handy.

The first step is deciding how much fabric you will need for this job. Take a look at the recliner in question, considering all of the separate parts, and keeping in mind that you will want to allow extra fabric for tucking, and adding more stuffing. Upholstery weight fabric is about 54" wide. You can leave on the selvage edge to get more out of the fabric.

Start by flipping the recliner over. Work from the bottom up. Strip the fabric from the bottom and back of the chair first. Then, turn the chair right-side-up, and work on the arms, seat, and foot area. Use containers to store separate groups of screws, and fasteners. Work on a section at a time, keeping track of what goes where. 

Take a look at the stuffing. It will either be composed of batting, or foam. If it's in good condition, it can simply be reused. If it's crushed, damaged, or if you want to put in fresh materials, it will have to be replaced. When it comes to batting, cotton is cheaper than polyester, but it is also a bit more difficult to work with.  When replacing foam, work with high-density, dacron-wrapped foam.

Lay out your new upholstery fabric, with the surface that will not show, facing up. You can use the old pieces of fabric that you removed from the chair as patterns, but keep in mind that these old pieces may be warped or stretched. Cut your new pieces, and leave extra room for fabric that is to be tucked. If these pieces are not symmetrical, you may find it useful to mark the tops and bottoms of these.

Next, comes the attachment of the fabric -- complete with either new or old foam or batting -- to each panel. It helps to use straight pins to position the fabric before attaching it permanently. Smooth the fabric out, and fold it neatly over the edges to prevent bulges and unevenness. While you work, remember that patterned fabrics will have to be aligned carefully. There's nothing worse than completing a job and realizing that one panel with plaid fabric is set at an odd diagonal angle, when the rest are not!

When you have the fabric positioned properly, staple it to each panel. Make the fabric taut, but not so taut that it shows signs of stress. Then, reattach your components and panels to the frame of the chair.
