Have you ever dropped a ring or something of value into a sink drain? The first thought that comes to mind is not to let anyone use the sink. The next is to call a plumber as soon as possible. But sometimes it can take a day or two for a plumber to come out to your home. If it is the weekend, you are going to be charged double. 

Why not give this job a try? It¡¯s fairly easy to do if you have the right tools. You are going to need a bucket, masking tape, lubricating spray, and slip joint pliers or a plumber's wrench (or possibly a small pipe wrench). Have a wet mop or clean rags handy in case you get water on the floor.

The trap is the curved pipe under the sink. It acts has a barrier to stop objects from reaching the main drain and to keep sewer gases from leaking back in the house. Place the bucket under the trap. Then turn off the water if you have a dripping faucet. The turn- off valves are located on two pipes at the bottom of the sink. To prevent marring, use your masking tape and wrap the head of the pliers before attempting to fit the pliers to the nut. Place the pliers around the slip nut and turn it counterclockwise until the nut is loose. Repeat this step on the second nut. Use lubricating spray if the nut is hard to turn. For chrome or copper piping, slide the slip nuts down and remove washer. For PVC piping, remove the slip nuts and washers. Then disconnect the trap and empty contents into your bucket. If your ring is not there, pull the stopper and let the water in the sink dislodge the ring or valuable so it will come out of the pipe and can be caught in the bucket.

To attach a new or old trap, look over the parts and see what kind of shape they are in. Then take any worn parts to a hardware store and ask for new ones. Slide the slip nut and washer onto the tailpiece. Connect the straight end of the trap with the tailpiece. Slip the washer over the joint and move the slip nut on top of the washer. Now tighten it loosely by hand. Then place the slip nut and washer onto the trap arm. Connect the bend of the trap with the trap arm. Slip the washer over the joint and move the slip nut on top of the washer. Tighten loosely by hand and then again with pliers. When it seems to be tight, turn on the water and check for leaks. Hopefully there will be none. Clean up the area and put away your tools.

For future reference, avoid handling valuable items like money or jewelry near an open sink drain. If you must adjust jewelry before a mirror that sits above your drain, close the drain first so that nothing can fall into it and become lodged. A moment¡¯s adjustment can save valuable time and effort in retrieving a dropped item.
