Older homes are notorious for having leaky, ill-fitting windows.  Old-style glass has none of the insulating properties that newer, double or even triple pane glass affords, and with energy costs at an all-time high, replacing those old windows makes good economic sense.  But if you are on a limited budget, replacing a window may seem a daunting task.  Relax.  It¡¯s easier to replace a window than you might think. 

The first step in replacing an existing window is to take some measurements.  Replacement windows are sized to fit standard window openings, which means the actual dimension of the area into which the window fits.  Measure the width and length of the opening from the actual frame.  Rather than leave anything to memory, write down these dimensions.  Decide whether you want wood or plastic windows.  This can make a difference price-wise. Wood offers more insulation value while plastic is lighter and easier to keep clean. 

In order to get the best price, let your ¡°fingers do the walking¡± before you begin to shop.  Call around to area home improvement centers, and get some pricing on windows that will fit the measurements you have noted.  Most likely, each store will offer several different brands of windows offering varying levels of insulation and special features.  Although these features are enticing, your basic concern should be the insulation value of the window.  The more expensive brands offer features such as easy-tilt for cleaning, but if you are on a budget, these extras can be sacrificed.

Write down prices from each store.  Don¡¯t forget to check area bargain centers.  There are several national outlets that offer closeouts and seconds, and these outlets can be a great resource for home remodelers on a budget.  They may not have every size, but if they have a window to fit your opening, you can reduce your cost significantly.  

Once you have determined the best source for your window, you can go and pick it up.  One word of caution, though.  If the room in which you are replacing the window has more than one existing window, make sure that you will be able to get additional windows that will match the one you are replacing.  Ideally, all windows in a home should be the same, but sometimes this is only a cosmetic requirement.  Don't forget to pick up a tube of caulking made especially for windows.  Watch out for color on the caulking. Clear is best since it matches any decor, but it is also available in white or brown. 

Once you have purchased your window and brought it home, it¡¯s time to get started.  Obviously, the best time to begin such a project is when the weather is clear and warm, and you can block out enough time to allow for any ¡°burps¡± in the process.  You certainly don¡¯t want to have to stop the installation before it is complete!   Also, although this is a job that can be done by one person, beginners might want to call on someone to assist.  Holding up a heavy window while trying to drill holes can be tricky!

Before you begin, remove the new window from its packaging and set the hardware package somewhere that will be easily accessible.  Take note of the manufacturer¡¯s instructions, if any.  Read them, and pay attention to any warnings or cautions that are included.  

Assemble the tools that you will need for the job - a strong straight-edge screwdriver, a hammer, a crowbar, a power drill, a caulking gun and caulk, and ideally, a power screwdriver.  You may also want to find some shim strips just in case you need them.  

Obviously, before you can install the new window, you will need to remove the old one.  First, carefully remove any trim or moldings from the inside opening.  Gently pry the trim up with the claw end of a hammer, and set aside. Mark left, right, top and bottom so that the trim will be replaced correctly.

Once the trim is removed, you will see the frame of the existing window.  Using a crowbar, pry one side of the window towards you.  Be careful with older windows since the glass may be fragile or poorly seated.  Pry all four sides away from the framing and removed the window.  

Lift up the new window and place it in the opening.  If you measured correctly, the window should fit snugly into the opening. You may have to gently tap the window into the opening with a hammer. Note, I said gently! 

If the window fits, you can then use the hardware that is provided and fasten the window to the frame. Normally, there are holes for screws in the frame of the window. Put one screw in all four sides to ensure that the window will not fall out while you finish the process. 

Once your new window is installed, make sure it opens and closes easily, and that there is no draft around the framing.  If this is the case, securely fasten the new window, and caulk all around the frame.  Once the caulk has set up, replace the trim.  Your new window is installed!

If you have measured incorrectly or if the opening is not level, you may need to shim the opening.  This can be accomplished by placing narrow wood strip on the frame and screwing or nailing them in place.  You can then proceed with the installation.  If the opening is too small, you may be able to ¡°shave¡± the framing so that the window will fit.  Be careful not to remove too much of the framing, though.  Continue to try fitting the window into the opening until it can be fit in snugly, and then proceed to complete the installation. 

Replacing windows can add to the value of your home and increase your comfort level.  When the job is complete, you will have windows that open and close easily, and the room has a fresh, new appearance.  Doing it yourself can save you hundreds of dollars too.  So, what are you waiting for?
