Window screens can be an often overlooked part of our house or apartment. Their main purpose is to keep bugs, flies, and other pests out of our living spaces. As long as they do their jobs, then we often tend to ignore them. But, once they get a hole or slit in them, and the pests start invading our living spaces, then it's definitely time to take action!

Typically, the most common problem with a window screen is that they develop a hole or tear in them. This type of damage is easy to repair if you have the basic know how!   

Problem: Repairing Small Holes or Tears   

This is the smallest and easiest type of repair to fix in a window screen. You can use a couple different products that you probably have around your house already. These products include clear finger nail polish and Super Glue (TM). 

To repair the small holes or tears, simply paint or dab on the polish or the glue onto the damaged area. Make sure that you cover the opening, plus, extend the product beyond it a little ways. That way, you'll be sure to cover the entire hole or tear. 

For holes or tears that are a little larger, you can use a good quality, all purpose glue that adheres to metal to repair them.  

Once the fingernail polish, Super Glue (TM), or glue is dry the repair will be practically unnoticeable. 

Problem: Repairing Larger Holes 

If the hole is larger than approximately a quarter of an inch in diameter, then you'll need to patch it with more than glue. You'll need to cut a patch that is the same material as the screen is. That is, if the window screen is aluminum, then you'll need a metal patch, and so on. Allow a little extra material on all sides of the patch. Then, apply a line of all purpose glue around all the edges of the patch. Position the patch over the hole, and press it to the window screen securely. Hold it for a few moments, then finally let go. Allow the repair to set undisturbed; refer to the manufacturer's directions on the glue container to find out the drying time.

Now, the bugs, flies, and flying pests will have to find another way if they're going to enter your house!      

Problem: Repairing Larger Holes Without Glue 

You can also sew a patch onto to your metal or vinyl window screen. You can use a heavy duty sewing thread, or, you can use a thin fishing line. This procedure works better on metal screen than it does on vinyl. Sewing vinyl screen tends to make it pucker.  

To do this, you'll need to cut a patch that is the same material as the screen is. Allow a little extra material on all sides of the patch. Then, thread a sewing needle if you're going to use thread, or a darning needle if you're going to use fishing line. 

Hold the patch on the window screen securely into place. Then, use the needle to sew it in place permanently. This procedure would be much easier if you have an assistant help you. They can stand on the other side and pass the needle and thread back to you through the screen.
