Being able to turn on or off a light in a second of time is a tremendous convenience that we sometimes take for granted. In fact, we seldom realize how important a light switch is until it stops working, especially at night or in dark places.

If you don¡¯t want to call an electrician to fix it, and who does, given the prohibitive cost of home service calls, you may be able to take care of this yourself. When repairing an electric light switch, take time to first make sure the power is off at the main service panel. There are two different kinds of switches. First, there is a single pole switch, which can be turned off or on in only one place. It will say ¡°off¡± and ¡°on¡± and have only three terminal screws. The next kind of switch is called a three-way, and you will be able to turn it off or on in two different places. It will have four terminals. This will make more sense if you have experience working with electrical outlets. If not, better call an expert. 

After you have turned off the power to the switch, remove the switch plate cover with a screwdriver. You should always double check to make sure the electricity is off by touching a voltage indicator to the screws on the side of the switch. If a light flashes or you hear a beeping sound, then you must not have the electricity off yet. When you are sure the electricity is disconnected, remove the screws that attach the switch to the box. Pull out the switch gently, remembering that the wires are still attached. Mark the wires with tape or a marking pen so you can identify them when you reassemble the new switch. 

Now take a screwdriver and remove the wire from the switch. After you have the old switch out, check it with the new one to see if they are the same. Take the two insulated wires that are black. (One might be black and the other white with black markings.) These are hot wires and should be fastened around the two metal terminals. Don¡¯t worry about the order in which they are installed.  

You will see a green insulated wire or a bare copper wire, which are ground wires, and these need to be connected to the green terminal on the switch. Hold the switch in one hand and make sure that the word ¡°off¡± is at the top. When you are connecting the wire to the switch, bend the tip of the wire clockwise with needle nose pliers so it will be easier to tighten around the terminal. Tighten the green or copper ground wire first. Now gently push the switch back into the box, making sure the wires are not touching each other. Replace the switch cover. Clean up your work area, and turn on the electricity to be sure the repair has taken effect. 

Simple home fix-it jobs like this one often can be completed quickly and easily. Be extra careful to follow safety procedures to avoid the risk of electric shock.
