If you have a washer that takes forever to fill, it can drive you crazy, especially when you are in a hurry to get things done. When the water trickles in or the machine just isn¡¯t filling, there are usually three reasons why this will happen. 

The first reason is that the water going into your washer is not turned all the way on. Check the water valves leading to the washer to see if they are completely open. Sometimes a home can have up to three valves that need to be open all the way to give you enough water pressure to fill the tub. Start at the water heater and work your way to the washer, checking each line as you go. You might come to a three-way split where the problem has occurred, or maybe one of the teenagers has shut off a line by accident when trying to turn on the water outside. If you have a shower in the basement, perhaps someone who planned to use it turned off the water to the washer to keep the shower hotter. However it happens, this is an easy problem to fix; just turn the faucet on all the way at each juncture. 

The second reason that the water may be taking so long to fill your washer is possibly related to the inlet screens going into the machine. These can get clogged and need to be cleaned or replaced. They are located where the hose screws into the washer. First unplug the washer or turn off the power at the main service panel. Then turn off the water to the washer at the wall behind the washer or nearest shut-off valve. Unscrew one hose at a time from the inlet valve, turning the coupling counterclockwise. Pour the water from the hose into a sink or bucket. You will need slip joint pliers to do this. Then take a small flat tip screwdriver to pry the screens out. Mark the hose ¡°hot¡± or ¡°cold¡± before you remove the other hose with a piece of masking tape. If for some reason you can¡¯t find the screens, it may be because you have hot water and your inlet screen will keep clogging. Or it may be due to the fact the screens were put in a hard-to-get spot so that you won¡¯t be able to remove them. Check your owner¡¯s manual for directions as to what to do when this happens. Soak clogged screens in white vinegar for twenty minutes and then use a toothbrush or a small wire brush to scrub them. 

The third possibility for slow washer filling is that the screens are damaged or bent. After you have the screens out, inspect them visually. If they are somehow broken, folded, or jammed so that water cannot easily pass through, you may need to buy new ones. Visit your local hardware store for replacements. Put the new screens in to be sure they fit correctly, and turn the hose coupling clockwise. Then tighten with the pliers. Turn on the water and plug the washer in or turn the power on. Your washer should fill readily with one or more of these adjustments. 

If you continue to have problems, contact your repair technician to find out what is wrong. The problem may stem from a clogged hose or a damaged interior washer part.
