The do-it-yourself homeowner, with a little direction, can easily complete repairing and maintaining home gutters. Inspection of the gutters is the first step in determining any repairs that need accomplished. This inspection should take place at least twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Repairs needed to be completed are usually leaks and damaged downspout, leaking gutter sections, leaking areas within the straight section, and replacing a damaged section. 

Materials and tools needed to perform repairs to gutters are silicone gutter caulk, plastic roofing cement, gutter liner, sheet metal screws, hammer, putty knife, wire brush, caulk gun, screwdriver, paintbrush, hacksaw and heavy-duty scissors.

To repair a leaking and damaged downspout, first remove the screws or the retaining hardware that holds the gutter together. Pull apart the gutter pieces that have been loosened and clean any existing caulk on them using a wire brush. Be sure to clean both the outside and inside of the gutter joints. Inspect any hardware such as a dented downspout that cannot be reused and replace any pieces with new pieces. Now apply caulk to the outside, near the end of the male piece of gutter joint, and reattach the female piece of gutter. Use screws or retaining hardware to secure the newly replaced joint.

To repair leaking gutter sections with no apparent damage such as rust or dents, the sealant is most likely to have leaked causing the damage. Scrape away as much old caulk as possible then apply new silicone joint caulk to waterproof the joint.

To replace leaking areas within straight gutter sections inspect the area and determine the cause of the leak. Generally, this leak will be caused by rusting gutter sections. This problem can be fixed with a patch, but will only need to be fixed again later.  To patch the area, clean the rust away with a wire brush and water. Next use a putty knife and spread roofing cement onto the clean area as well as the surrounding areas. Keep the patch as flat as possible so water will be able to run down the gutter correctly. For a more permanent fix to this problem, replace the entire gutter section or cut out the damaged section and replace it. 

To replace a damaged gutter section, make sure the problem is the gutter and not the gutter support. Remove any retaining hardware from the section of gutter that is to be replaced. Now use a 4x4 block of wood and place it inside the good section of gutter as the bad section of gutter is cut out with a hacksaw. The block of wood will keep the gutter in good shape and keep the gutter from twisting while the gutter is being cut. Cut a section of gutter out of extra an extra gutter joint to replace the section that is damaged. Cut the section at least 2¡± longer than the section to be replaced. Use a caulk gun and apply roofing cement to the inside of the original gutter. Place the new section into the existing gutter so that it overlaps the sections of gutter and securely fasten the sections together. Replace any retaining hardware that was removed to keep gutter in place.

 Inspecting the gutters on a house is an important task when preventing damage to a house. Quickly making any repairs that are found is also important to prevent any damage.
