If you have a tile or linoleum floor, you probably have noticed a gradual accumulation of random scuffmarks here and there. There are many ways to remove them, even those that are ground into the floor covering. Avoid the wrong ways of removing them. Don't use sandpaper or steel wool. Avoid harsh cleansers or you might take off more than black marks. Here are a few tips for the chemicals that work best and how to prevent the floor from getting black marks from now on.

One of the best ways to keep black marks off the floor is to keep it waxed. That way the scuffed area will hurt the wax, not the floor. Enamel paint also will usually confine black marks to the surface. But flat paint will allow grime or grease to penetrate the surface. A waxed floor will not only protect the surface from black marks. It helps to keep grime from being deposited. When you start getting several black marks, it is time to wax the floor.

The thicker you apply wax, the fewer black marks your floor will get. The best way to remove ground-in dirt from your floor is with an all-purpose cleaning solution and a sponge. Try to remember to only use a green nylon pad if nothing else seems to work. If the floor becomes lighter where the spot was removed, reduce the contrast by first rinsing the area with a fifty-fifty vinegar solution. Then lightly re-wax the spot after it dries with a clean cloth dampened with wax. Try to feather the edges to help blend the spot with the surrounding area.

When removing black marks from a painted floor, take time and care not to abrade the surface. A light coat of wax on a painted floor will help with the continuing build-up of grease problem and make the floor shine. Try to remember when you keep your floor waxed that it becomes very slippery. You might want to put down some throw rugs.

When substances like oil or asphalt are pressed or scratched into the wood, try an all- purpose cleaning solution and a sponge first. If that doesn't work, you might dip a terry cloth in paint thinner and clean the mark by using pressure from your finger. Then rinse the area and take a cloth to buff it dry.

Research shows that a high percentage of dust, pollens, and germs get into a home through people tracking them in on their shoes. To protect wood floors in your home, consider laying an area rug to cover the high-traffic areas in most of the rooms. Or you can place a few throw rugs or accent rugs in an attractive way to make a room appear warmer and also catch some of the soil on guests¡¯ shoes. You also might want to set out a shoe rack near the entrance to your home for guests who are willing to remove their shoes as they enter the house. Teach the kids to remove their outdoor shoes and wear slippers on the household floors. 

Clean a scuff or grime mark as soon as it appears to prevent it becoming fixed in the flooring and harder to remove later.
