A home addition can be built in just about any size and for many different purposes. A screened-in porch is a perfect addition for someone wanting to extend his or her living space by bringing a bit of the outdoors in, or some of the indoors out! By identifying what you expect to use the space for before beginning any construction, you will be able to better define what you want in your design, and what you expect to get out of the extra living space. Will you be using it mainly for a spot to sit and relax, away from the sun and rain, and the hordes of mosquitoes that arrive every spring and summer in most warm climates? Will you be serving meals in it, taking advantage of the cool evenings instead of eating indoors in a hot kitchen? By realistically figuring out what you intend to use the addition for, you will be much better prepared when having to make decisions on design features and size. 

Ask yourself how many months you hope to use the space each year. Depending on the climate where you live, whether it is predominately hot or relatively cool, this will help you decide on different constructions features such as insulation, space heaters, fans, even air conditioning units. 

Before beginning any actual building, you will also need to make several solid decisions. First, will you be screening in a preexisting porch or building one from scratch? If building one, depending upon the layout of your house and yard, you will need to decide where to locate your porch. Most screened porches are usually attached somewhere on the backside of a house, directly adjacent to an exterior door, for the simple aspect of privacy, and ease of access into the home. Occasionally you will see one on the front or side of a house, and if that is where you feel you will get the most use out of it, definitely build it in that location. 

Next, you will have to decide if your porch will be screened in just with screens, or if it will consist of windows with screens. If you are just adding screens, can they be built separately so they can be taken down and stored during the winter months or will they be permanent fixtures? For northern climates, windows with screens will extend the length of time you will be able to actually use the space and you will not have to have the added task of removing and storing the screens each fall. In addition, even during the colder parts of the year, a small space heater will keep an enclosed porch cozy. If you happen to live where the weather is overly hot, windows with built in UV protection along with an air conditioning unit may be just what is required to make the porch as useable as possible.

Remember if you are transforming a porch that already exists into a screened in area, you may have to alter other parts of the existing structure, such as flooring and the roof area. If adding a roof at the same time you screen in a porch, make sure to extend the eves far enough out to provide ample shade if heat is going to be an issue. Also, remember to consider the floor area if it contains wide slats and you are thinking about an area with a controlled temperature. Adding an air conditioner or a space heater to an area that has a floor area open to wind from outside may not be advisable. 

No matter how you decide to build your porch, you will surely get a great amount of pleasure from the added space, especially if you enjoy the outdoors, but dislike the bugs and rain that often accompany the summer temperatures.
