Organizing a garage and actually utilizing it for storage and vehicle protection, isn¡¯t as daunting as it sounds.  Even if you are stuffed to the rafters with boxes of treasures, there is hope.  With this guide, a little time and elbow grease, you can be organized and tidy in a weekend.

Start off with a goal of organization.  Be prepared to donate, throw out, return or sell treasures that haven¡¯t been used or you¡¯ve just discovered you have.  Open the garage door with determination and organization in mind.

As you dive into your piles, create four piles with your current treasures.  One pile is for objects you use throughout the year; even if they are seasonal; if you still use them, keep them.  Another pile should be for donation or sale; a general rule is if you haven¡¯t utilized the object in twelve months, you probably can rid yourself of it.  Have a tag or garage sale and make a few dollars from your efforts.  The third pile is for returns and sentimental value.  Return objects borrowed ¨C neighbors will once again start to talk to you and, if that automatic tie rack can¡¯t be discarded for sentimental reasons, at least it can be organized away from the everyday-use pile.  The last pile can consist of recycled units; batteries, cans, metals and other debris that your town or community collects.  Now is a perfect time to utilize their collection services and rid yourself of dangerous fuels, paints and flammable products.  Use your town directory or the Internet to see when collections are accepted or what groups will use and pick up other supplies.

Purchase large plastic storage bins, inexpensive but sturdy shelving, walls hooks and a wall pegboard.  Most of these items can be found at home improvement stores and are inexpensive.

Select a wall for hanging common items, preferably away from a vehicle to prevent scraps and scratches.  Install a pegboard on the wall and hook to hang shovels, rakes, bikes, lawn chairs, small ladders and other objects.  The objects should be things used regularly as the hooks will provide easy access.  Large objects can hang on high hooks, while shorter items such as snow brushes and garden tools can be hung at eye level or lower.  Tape an outline of the object on the pegboard so you and everyone else will know what goes where.  This makes it very easy to spot if something was left outside or borrowed.

Attack your ¡°keep¡± pile and organize it further into storage bins.  For example, have all garden tools in one container, vehicle maintenance in other, lawn care in a third.  Label each storage bin and place against a wall; be certain to stack with the most commonly used on the top and seasonal uses on the bottom.  Designate certain colored storage bins, or a certain area, for child use.  All toys, games and recreational supplies should be placed in these bins for easy access.  If a project is in the works, for instance establishing a compost heap, place all supplies needed in one container and add to it as needed.  Designating a storage bin for one purpose make it easier to start or finish work on a specific chore.

Finally, install sturdy shelving for those catchall items.  Designate certain shelves for recycling, small items, wood scraps or power tools.  Be certain to keep dangerous items on top shelves so curious little hands won¡¯t be tempted.  Add shoeboxes or small plastic shelves and bags to keep the very small items from falling or getting lost.
