Alabama¡¯s nickname is the Heart of Dixie. With its true southern flavor and down home hospitality, Alabama exudes southern in almost every area. If you aren¡¯t from Alabama, however, and you are planning on moving there, you are in for a treat! Alabama has a little bit of everything, including breathtaking mountains, majestic rivers, and a sparkling coastline. With such varied terrain, you may have difficulty deciding which you prefer the best. 

The northeast part of Alabama boasts the beginning of the Smokey Mountains. If you love mountainous areas, you might enjoy living here. Huntsville sits in a beautiful valley, surrounded by beautiful mountains. Huntsville is a city full of technology based companies. It is also home to the world-renowned NASA Space and Rocket Center, which is home to Space Camp. 

Scottsboro is closer to the corner of Alabama which borders Georgia and Tennessee. Scottsboro isn¡¯t as large as Huntsville, but it is the gateway to the Smokey Mountains and a beautiful city. 

If you are interested in a cosmopolitan area that is made up of smaller towns, then the Shoals area, in northwest Alabama, is just for you. Comprised of four towns, including Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia, the Shoals has the best of both worlds. It is close to an hour from the larger city of Huntsville and approximately two hours from Birmingham, to the south, or Nashville, Tennessee, to the north. Florence is the largest of the four cities, and it borders the majestic Tennessee River. The other three cities are smaller, quaint towns, and each one has a distinctive flavor all its own. 

Birmingham is centered closer to the middle of the state, and it is the largest city in Alabama. Birmingham offers a variety of activities for everyone, including professional sports, cultural events, and fine shopping. Birmingham has many business opportunities, several colleges, and wonderful, outlying communities for those who don¡¯t want to live in the midst of the city. 

If you are planning on moving closer to the coast, you may be interested in Montgomery. This city, which is the second largest in the state, is also the state capital, and its rich history is evident in many of the wonderful, old government buildings. Many people enjoy living close to Montgomery because of the big city atmosphere and the close proximity to the beach. 

The farther south you travel, the flatter the terrain becomes. You¡¯ve left your mountain range behind in the northern area of the state, but if you love the ocean, it¡¯s a good trade-off. If any Alabama city is considered the epitome of the South, it has to be Mobile. Mardis Gras is celebrated here every year, and this city by the bay boasts old town flair with southern accents. 

You can move a little further along the coastline to Gulf Shores, tourism mecca. Gulf shores offers beach goers pristine beaches covered in white sand. Nearby Dauphin Island is home to an educational biological sea lab. Gulf Shores gives visitors and residence alike the opportunity to enjoy the sun and sand without leaving the state. 

No matter what area of the state you are interested in, Alabama has something that is sure to please. From its majestic mountains, powerful rivers, and gorgeous coastline, Alabama has surely earned its name as Alabama the Beautiful.
