Home entertaining is experiencing a Renaissance. People are choosing to stay home to entertain family and friends, rather than going out. This resurgence in home entertaining brings the complexities of accommodating all of your guests. A proper hostess considers all of her guests, their highlights and idiosyncrasies. Hosts are sensitive to the cultural, political and religious diversity of their guests. But what if one has a physically challenged guest? What if one's guest is wheelchair bound, and requires additional accommodation?
The first consideration for your guest is the entranceway. If you live in an apartment building and are not on the first floor, an elevator is a necessity for your guest. But, the elevator must be wide enough to allow the wheelchair access. Most modern elevators meet regulations that specify a sufficient width for wheelchair access. But if you live in an older building, the elevator style may vary. The doors may be too narrow for a wheelchair to pass through.
The front floor entrance must also be able to accommodate wheelchair patrons. Sometimes, buildings have double doors, with only one as functional. Ahead of time, speak with the superintendent, doorman or proper person about unlocking the second door. This way you can open both doors to accommodate your guest.
If you have more than one stair step unto the common door of your building, your guest will require a ramp. A ramp is easy to make and easier to install. Because you live in an apartment building, you can¡¯t do any permanent installations. Thus you need something, easy, quick and temporary. A sheet of wood will suffice. You should buy a piece of wood that is two feet wider than the wheelchair. The length will depend on how many steps you will be accommodating. It is best to measure the stairs from the top step to the ground, on the diagonal. Add an additional foot, for a starting advantage. Since there is no railing with this instant ramp, someone will need to aid your guest up the ramp.
If you own your own home, you can invest in more durable and permanent options. Choose to self-install or contract help to attach a permanent ramp to your home. Install a rail to this ramp, so that guests may navigate independently.
Once inside the home, your guest may be conscious of space, and shy away from mingling. Encourage your guest to participate by laying out a spacious route. Instead of clearing a wide path for your guest, present several avenues of movement. Arrange the furniture in the middle, so that guests mingle around the furniture. This allows a circular pattern for your guest to travel. Even through the furniture, you can make a direct path leading toward the entryway of the room. This will allow the guest a direct route out of the room, when necessary.
If you are having a dinner party, keep in mind that a wheelchair is much wider than a table chair. Prepare for your guest to take up the space of one and a half guests. This is important to remember, when setting the table. If the table is square, seat your guest at a corner seat. It is preferable that they sit at the corner nearest the entry. This allows them to excuse themselves without intrusion upon other diners. If the table is round, again, seat the guest closest to the entry.
Consider the fabrics and textiles of your home. If one has a shag style rug, you may want to consider retiring it for the visit. The wheels of the chair may come into conflict with such a prominent material. If one has marble floors, one would be concerned with skids and slippage. Confer with your guest as to the grip of their tires, and if necessary lay down a carpet runner to prevent them from sliding. Also one may want to protect their floors with an extra coat of wax. The wheels can wreak havoc on hardwood floors, as well as other materials.
People with pets should consider their pet¡¯s personality. If one has a gregarious pet, consider if this may put them in harms way of an electric wheelchair. Motorized wheelchairs may be more difficult to halt for sake of a friendly dog. Animals can be seriously injured in an accident concerning a wheelchair. Preparing to entertain your guests is a lot of fun. It is fun to take into consideration all of your guests personalities. But party preparation should also be practical. When accommodating a wheelchair bound guest, safety is key. Safety for your guest, your pets and your home is number one. Providing safety and accessibility for your guest will allow all guests to relax and enjoy the festivities. |
