Do you want to enjoy a summer breeze in your living room while keeping the bugs out? Do you currently have screens with curled corners or small holes, screens that need to be replaced, but you don¡¯t want to spend much money? Making your own screens is a challenge, but it is not to difficult if you are well prepared. It is possible to purchase kits with all of the supplies you need, including a cone with mesh, corners, pull tabs, springs, splines and a spline tool. You can purchase screen kits to suit your needs, whether you prefer a screen to keep out excessively strong solar rays, pets, or bugs.
If you prefer to build your own screens from scratch, you will need good hand eye coordination and attention to detail as well as the right tools. Start with a flat, sturdy working surface which is larger than the screen. You will also need a miter saw or hack saw, a miter box, a utility knife, a hamper, tin snips, a spline roller, a screw driver, a tape measure, a 3/16¡± drill bit and a pencil for marking. The blocking should be composed of parts which are 3¡±x3¡± and ?¡± thick and ?¡± nails to hold them in place. Examine the spline. It is composed of several parts. The spline groove is the indented area where the screen is locked. The spline side is located at the side of the groove and the smooth side is the portion without the groove.
First, take a sample screen and test it to find the best fit. To remove the tension springs, place the head of a screw driver between the frame and the tension spring. Press on the spring at its high point and the spring will be released from the anchor hole. The distance between these holes will indicate where holes need to be drilled. Now observe how the pull tabs and the center bar clips are positioned so you will know where to install them.
Now, cut the frame to the appropriate size. Measure twice and cut once to avoid mistakes. Take the side with the tension springs and drill a hole for each spring. The holes and the springs should be the same distance apart. To block the frame, use a good work table. If the frame is not laid flat, the screen will be uneven. Place the screen with the splines facing up. Make sure the corners are 90 degrees. Block each corner after driving a ? ¡° nail through the center into the work surface. Check the corners when you are finished and install the center bar, if there is one. Place the pull tabs on the corner blocks with the edges snapped into the grooves.
Unroll the aluminum screen to hang 1/8¡± over the edge. Mitre the corner using the tin strips. Using a roller, roll the screen into the grooves while pressing it with your free hand to prevent the screen from bunching. Trim the screen so that there is 1/8¡± remaining on each side and use a screwdriver to push the screening into the corners.
Enjoy a bugless, well ventilated home with your new summer screens!
