If you¡¯ve ever locked yourself out of your house, you know how frustrating it is and how important it is to have a hidden key somewhere outside. The typical places to hide keys, like under the door mat won¡¯t work - everyone knows that trick already. You¡¯ll have to come up with something new and different in order to fool everyone. You can find a new hiding place that might be discovered by others accidentally, or start on an ingenious plan to hide the key out in open view. 

Some of us have seen a key holder that resembles a rock. The bottom slides open and you hide your key in it. But, if someone ever picks up the rock, they can immediately tell it¡¯s not a rock by its weight and by the fact that it has a door on the bottom. Hide a key a little more efficiently by using a dental floss snap case with a piece of foam inside. Wrap the key in the foam, or glue the foam to the inside of the case to prevent the key from rattling, should someone pick it up. Now for camouflaging the key holder. There are lots of different ways you can conceal the snap case by using things found in nature - or replicas of such. 

Use silk plants to cover the key holder. The plants are waterproof, look real from a few paces, and can be glued onto the snap case. Attach the plants or flowers as they would appear in nature. First attach some silk grasses, then small stalks, leaves and flowers - some standing upright, some leaning. Be sure to keep the lid and the body of the snap case separate so they don¡¯t become glued together. After covering the case, snap it together to see that it is concealed completely, and if not, attach a few more silk flowers. Spanish moss works well to cover the case, and you can then glue small flowers or greenery into the moss. Silk ferns are perfect for this project too, because they can be placed just about anywhere. Set the plant-covered snap case close to a bush, beside the front porch steps, or under a nearby tree. 

Bark pieces, normally used to keep weeds out of gardens, make a great cover for the hide-a-key. They¡¯re usually flat and look very natural in the flower garden. First paint the snap case brown, and then attach the bark with glue. Never use hot glue for an outdoors project; it¡¯ll melt away and your cover will be blown. Choose contact cement, white glue or another waterproof adhesive. 

You can combine materials and put bark pieces, then Spanish moss and a few flowers, or bark pieces with a couple of rocks on top. Although the craft can be placed most anywhere in the yard, be sure to place it somewhere that it looks natural. One fern directly against the front step will look a little conspicuous. Place the hidden key under a bush, in the flower garden, amongst other rocks or wood chips, close to trees, or place several silk plants in a row - one of them holding the hidden key.
