Nowadays, it's more important than ever to do everything you can to help keep you and your family and your personal belongings safe and secure. While some home owners choose to put iron window and door guards on their home for mainly decorative purposes, these additions also help to keep out would - be burglars and thieves.
You can make your own iron window and door guards if you basically have a welder, a cutting torch, a heavy duty electric drill and bits, a measuring tape, and a little know how.
Here's the know how:
The first step in this project is to use the measuring tape to measure the window you want to cover. You'll need to measure inside the frame because that's where the guard will fit into. Let's say, for example's sake, that the window measures twenty inches wide and is thirty inches tall.
The second step is to measure and cut two long pieces for the length, and two shorter pieces of iron for the width. A quarter or half inch thick pieces of iron will work well for this project.
Now, lay the pieces out for the frame of the window guard and weld them together. Set this piece aside for now and allow it to cool down. In the meantime, you'll need to decide how far apart you want the middle bars to be. Let's say, using the example, that you want the bars to be five inches apart. So you'll need to measure and cut three more iron bars that are a hair under thirty inches long. Check the middle bars to make sure they fit inside the frame.
The fourth step in this project is to measure and mark the top of the frame. You'll need to measure from the left side in five inches; then another five inches; and finally a third five inches.
Repeat this process with the bottom of the iron frame. These marks will show you where the tops and the bottoms of the middle bars need to be positioned in order to fit inside the frame straight.
Finally, position the iron bars inside the frame one by one, and weld them into place.
Now that you have the basic window guard made, you'll need to add one more feature which is the attachment bars. These four bars, which need to be made out of flat iron pieces, will attach to the corners of the window guard and then secure it to the window frame.
You'll need to measure to determine how long the bars need to be in order to reach from the guard to the inside edge of the window frame. Then, measure and cut four attachment bars.
Before you can attach them to the frame, you'll need to use the heavy duty electric drill to bore holes near the ends that fit over the window frame. Each bar will need one hole drilled in it.
The next step is to position the iron bars onto the four corners of the frame. Weld them securely into place, one at a time.
Now you're iron window guard is ready to be sanded and painted, then installed!!
To make a door guard, you can repeat the same procedure for making a window guard, with these changes:
Instead of using attachment bars, the door guard will need to be welded onto side hinges so it can swing open and shut. The door guard will also need a latch attached to it so it can be locked and unlocked.
And, finally, if you want your window or door guard to be a little fancier, you can tack weld additional pieces of metal onto or across the middle bars in a decorative fashion.
