Residential outdoor solar lighting is a near-perfect lighting solution for the homeowner. Solar lights offer several advantages: zero operating costs, reliability, easy maintenance and quick installation requiring no laborious trenches to dig, or complicated wire runs connected to your home¡¯s electrical system.

Solar lights are ideal for low-level lighting applications in the yard along entranceways, walkways, stairs, driveways, swimming pools, gardens and docks, just about anywhere as long as the lights have access to the sun. Although expensive, about $20-$30 per unit available in several colors and styles, they have zero operating costs. Once installed, the lights begin working immediately. The light¡¯s solar collector gathers energy from the sun during the day that is stored in a battery, automatically providing low-level illumination for 12-15 hours during the night.

Reliability is a big factor. With proper care, the products should last for years, because little maintenance is required.

Solar lights are made of a metal or plastic housing with a 2x2¡± solar panel on top that collects the sun¡¯s energy. Inside the housing is a circuit board containing some transistors, a diode and a light sensor that senses ambient light. Once the light falls beneath a set threshold, a switch in the circuit releases energy stored in a AA Ni-Cad battery, applying power to a tiny light bulb called an LED, or Light Emitting Diode, that emits white light bright enough to navigate by.

Maintenance is easy. The solar panel will need an occasional cleaning of dust build-up deposited by blowing winds, or mud that may be splashed on by sprinklers or passing vehicles if installed along a driveway. Leaf accumulations, overgrown shrubbery or foliage should be removed or cut back so the collector¡¯s access to the sun isn¡¯t blocked. Fixtures that have been bumped by cars, snowplows, mowers, errant baseballs, basketballs, missed footballs, dogs or children can quickly be fixed by cleaning the collector and sticking the housing base back in the soil.

The AA Ni-Cad battery should last for two years and should be changed then. Changing the battery is about as difficult as changing the batteries in your portable CD player. Just open the access panel, pop out the old battery and replace with the new.

The LED will fail--in about 25 years, the rated life of the bulb. It¡¯s not a fixable component as yet. The only way to fix a failed LED is to replace the entire fixture. But this may not be a problem in the future.

During the next 25 years, developing solar lighting technology will leapfrog current product features and abilities. It¡¯s more than likely that you¡¯ll be replacing older units with newer ones that may be bigger and emit more light for longer periods well before the LED gives out. Or the LED may become a replaceable component like the battery. Manufacturing costs may continue to decrease, resulting in lower prices. But even though solar lights are somewhat expensive, they are one of the best investments you can make for your yard requiring little maintenance and zero operating costs.
