Installing under-cabinet lighting is a popular way to improve the look of any home without much work or money.  Simply follow some helpful hints and enjoy the experience of performing the job without professional assistance.

In doing this job and any other job involving electricity, always make sure to take all precautionary measures to ensure your safety.  It is good practice to wear protective eyewear as well.  Be sure that the power source is completely turned off before you start this project.  You must have great respect for electricity!

It is also advisable to study and follow any instructions provided with the light to be installed.  Tools required are minimal and little physical effort is needed.  Just a little patience and a few simple steps will allow you to enjoy under-cabinet lighting in no time. 

If you are wiring for an under-cabinet light in a newly constructed home, make sure to get an accurate measurement of where the cabinets will go so you can get a point blank spot to leave your wire for the light you are installing.  If you can get the builder of the house or cabinets to mark the spot, that will be a definite plus.  As you know, not all cabinets are the same size, so make sure to get the right size light to go with the width of the cabinet.  Upon your discretion, you can either designate a wire to it from an outlet nearby in which case your wire will be hot at all times and light will have to be turned on and off by switch on light itself, or you can control light by operating with a switch on the wall designated for it.  In either case wire will connected in the same fashion in the light.

So, now you have your wire stubbed out where it needs to be under your cabinets.  Light strip will usually be in two parts:  the base which will screw into cabinet, and the light itself which will, once wires are connected, screws into the base.  Once you have stripped back enough insulation on romex to expose enough of the three individual wires inside to enter light.

*  Take the base of the light and butt up against wall and bottom of cabinet after bringing in your wire through hole in back of base.  Simply screw through holes on top of base at bottom of cabinet.  If connector is not provided with your fixture, it will be a good idea to obtain one and put it on the wires at the point where it will enter base of light.  Let's finish this job, shall we.  Base will usually have a lip on either side with a screw hole in which your light will screw into.  Make things easy on yourself.  Lips will have the shape to where your lights can slip into lips and suspend with inside of light facing you.  Have your wire caps ready.  You're home free!  Strip your white and black wires of Romex coming into your light just enough to make your connections with wires of light fixture.  Simply twist your white with white, your black with black, your bare, which is your ground, with ground on fixture.  (Ground on light may be green, bare, or a green screw on light)  Screw your light to your base.  Insert however many fluorescent tubes it calls for.  Slip in the lens that is provided with the light and turn it on!

*Base of light will have what are known as "knockouts".  These are entry holes that need to be knocked out to push your wire through.  If there is no match, use a drill bit that will make a suitable size hole.  You can usually drill a hole in base with very little effort.  The metal that the base is made of is thin and easy to work with.
