The standard 60-watt incandescent light bulb has taken us a long way, but there are some new exciting options in lighting, color, style and longevity.  This article will describe some of these features and offer hints on how to blend them together for the overall lighting look you want.

Standard incandescent bulb: to see where we're starting from, the standard pear-shaped light bulb provides light by heating a filament, a process that loses 90% of its to heat.  These bulbs burn for 750 to 1,000 hours on average, the equivalent of about three hours a day for a year.

Fluorescent lights: in the past, fluorescent lights have had a problem with their magnetic ballast (power transformer), which caused flickering and humming.  The newer fluorescents use electronic ballasts, eliminating the flicker and noise.  The whiter light they provide gives a lift to colors in the room and adds a more natural look.

Compact fluorescent bulb: these give off as much light as regular incandescent bulbs, but use only one-fourth the energy. They last about 10,000 hours.  They come in a number of shapes, such as U-tube, circle, triple/quad tube, and D-shaped, and are very efficient.  They also are available as a screw-in replacement for traditional incandescent bulbs, and produce the same amount of light on 1/3 to 1/4 the power.

Halogen: halogen lights, now popular for car headlights, usually last at least 2,000 hours.  They produce a bright white light, especially useful for accent, recessed and track lighting.  You must be careful and not touch the bulb with your bare hands, since the oils from your fingers may affect the bulb's performance and lifetime.

Xelogen bulbs: these new light bulbs, a combination of xenon and halogen, are very efficient and provide more accurately rendered colors than incandescent.  They also last up to 10 times more than halogen, and can be touched without harming the bulb's lifetime or performance.

Neodymium: these bulbs give an effect close to sunlight by filtering out red and amber-toned light.

Halogen Infrared-Reflecting: Halogen Infrared-Reflecting (HIR) lamps are very efficient.  A special coating on a quartz shield around the element reflects light back to the filament, giving a cleaning effect, and nearly doubling its efficiency.  They have a color similar to that of halogen lamps.

Low voltage lamps:  running at between 6 and 75 volts, a low voltage lamp has more precise beam control than a larger one.  These lamps are good for highlighting small objects at close ranges.  They come in a variety of beam widths - for example, narrow spotlight, narrow floodlight, and wide floodlight.

LEDs: Light Emitting Diodes are beginning to appear in home lighting.  These are the lights commonly used in electronics (you stereo's red "on" light, for example), and offer low voltage, longer life span, 10 times that of a regular bulb.  They are available in almost any color.

Special incandescent bulbs: the old-fashioned light bulb also has some new features - several companies now make a "natural" or "full-spectrum" bulb that is close to sunlight in color.  These bulbs make colors look more real, and may help fight conditions such as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder.)

Blending: combining different types of lighting has become popular.  Here are some light mixing ideas:

1). Mix sconces (single lamps often found on the wall or floor) with recessed fluorescent lights hidden in the ceiling.

2). Mix direct and indirect lighting sources.

3). High-tech lighting mixed with dark colored lights or colored glass.

4). Low key lighting mixed with high-output types of lighting.

Keep in mind that many of these newer types of lighting use less energy while providing equal illumination, and last longer.  Energy-efficient lights may cost more up front, but often make up the difference in energy savings over time.
