When your garbage disposal gets stuck, here are a few instructions to fix it yourself before grabbing the phone and calling your local plumber. If the disposal runs but won’t drain or backs-up into the sink, a plunger may clear the blockage.  You will need to block the opening to the other sink to give a sufficient vacuum seal for the plunger to work efficiently.  If the plunger alone won’t clear the blockage, remove the U-trap under the sink and you may be able to clear the blockage in the waste pipe.  

If you have overloaded your garbage disposal, it may cause the motor to stall.  The machine will automatically turn itself off to keep from burning up.  Most units have a reset button on the side or the bottom of the unit that will pop out when the system stalls.  Let the motor cool for a few minutes, then find the reset button and push it back in.  If the reset button won’t stay in, the motor may not have been given enough time to have sufficiently cooled.  Wait another few minutes and then reset the motor once again.

If this does not start the disposal working again, then you may have something lodged in the blades of the machine. Before trying to un-jam the disposal, unplug the unit.  This is very crucial before you decide to “go fishing” and try to dislodge the stuck object.  Use a flashlight and look down into the unit.  It may flash on the small piece of bone or whatever is stuck in the machine.  Never stick your hand into the unit; instead, use a pair of needle nose pliers and try to dislodge the stuck object.  If you manage to free it, restore the power and push the reset button again to restart the machine.

If the unit still does not respond, the motor may be frozen and require the use of the hex wrench that came with the unit. Find the small hole on the bottom or the side of the disposal that fits the hex wrench and try to wiggle the rotor back and forth.  If you cannot free the jammed motor with the hex wrench, try a broom handle.  Insert the broom handle into the top of the unit and, working in a counter-clockwise motion, pry the two to four small projections on the bottom of the grinding plate, working the broom handle back and forth until the plate spins free. Restore the power and reset the unit.

Tips:

While a garbage disposal generally works well when used properly, there are several items that should never be put down the system.  These include small bones, dry rice, coffee grounds, noodles, celery or other fibrous vegetables, bottle caps, or potato skins.

Never put your face directly over the disposal when you turn it on.  An object may fly out and cause injury. Always use cold water when running the disposal.  It will not only help the garbage as it is forced through the cutting blades, it will help keep the disposal cool.  Continue running the water for a minute or so after you turn off the disposal to help wash the matter down the plumbing lines.

Grease is a big no-no in any drain line as it may solidify in the plumbing lines and cause a major blockage only a plumber can solve.  If your dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal, turn on the disposal when the hot, soapy water is draining to help further flush the lines.

Freshen your garbage disposal with a bit of baking soda and dishwashing detergent.  Just sprinkle a bit of the soda and couple of squirts of detergent into the disposal and using a bottle brush, scrub vigorously.  Flush with clean water.
