Location: Home > house > Lawns mower repair tips: necessary maintenance to prevent lawn mower problems
In order for your new lawn mover to run at top notch and keep your lawn looking it¡¯s best, it will need to be maintained to keep it running sound. Failure to maintain your lawn mower will not only damage the engine and other mechanical parts, but will damage your lawn as well.
Before starting any maintenance on your lawn mower, read the maintenance instructions that come with your mower. Each manufacturer has strict standards for which you will need to follow for maintenance issues. Alternating from these standards could cause damage and void your warranty if one came with your lawn mower.
When doing maintenance on your lawn mower, first thing you will want to do is pull off the spark plug. This is very important for your own safety as well as for the life of your lawn mower. Never ever do maintenance without first pulling out the spark plug!
The key to a beautiful lawn, one that you can be proud of, is sharp blades. This saves stress on the blade and the engine as well. A dull blade has to work harder at cutting the grass and only rips the grass. Next, check your engine oil before use to make sure it is full and clean. If it looks dirty, change it. If it is low on oil, add oil. Change your oil each season or after 25 hours of use. If your lawn mower is brand new and used for the first time, you will need to change the oil one time after 5 hours of use.
You will need to replace your spark plug once a year and clean your air filter every 15 hours of use. Changing the air filter will keep your engine breathing properly. Once a year checking your control cables will make sure they are free moving. If they are worn, replace them. This is also a good rule for any control handles. They sometimes will rust or break. Any bolts that are rusted or broken will need to be replaced at any time during the life of your lawn mower. Check the tires for any wear. Tires that are worn will not have traction. Replace any frayed pull cords.
Never put your hands under the lawn mower when it is running or without removing the spark plug first. Use safety glasses and ear plugs at all times when operating your lawn mower. At the end of the season, or when you are going to put your lawn mower away for a long period of time, you will need to treat your gas so it won¡¯t go bad.
Use a fogging oil preserve. This will also protect your carburetor.
If your lawn mower paint finish is faded and not looking new, you can cover up the engine with painters tape and use a spray can of heat resistant paint. Let dry 24 hours, remove the tape.
Following these tips will keep your lawn mower running at its best. Remember to always cover your mower and keep it out of the weather. |
