A beautiful lawn is the pride of many family owners, and the enjoyment of a home's residents. During the growing season each year, most of us know to cut the grass or trim weeds when they get too large. But there are other maintenance tasks that should be monitored on a monthly basis. To plan ahead for these, here are some tips for creating a monthly checklist:

1. Check lawn for growth, health, and weeds. Even if it doesn't look shaggy yet, is it nearly time for a trim? If so, you may want to set a date when your schedule is less hectic or the weather forecast is promising. That way you won't be caught scrambling at the last minute to cut the lawn before a major project at work or following several days of rain. Also check your lawn's health. If the grass is turning brown, you may need to start watering it each evening. Some drought-stricken residents may want to water morning and night, unless a water ban prohibits the area's water supply from this use. Also check for weeds before they get a major stranglehold on your lawn. A little white vinegar may be enough to omit them rather than bringing out the heavy-duty and toxic weed killers.

2. Inspect flower beds, vegetable gardens, trees, shrubs, and other foliage. Is everything green and growing as it should be? Look for blight on roses or your pansies' wilting. It may be time to sprinkle a little fertilizer on plants that require routine feeding. 

3. Examine lawn care equipment. Cautiously lean off dried mud or debris from the lawn mower blades or wheels. Be sure the mower blades are sharp, tractor wheels have air, and handles are sturdy on hand-held tools such as the shovel or rake. Look over garden decorator items, such as artificial birds, plaques, or ceramic animals to be sure they are intact and haven't broken or chipped. 

4. Refill needed supplies. Lawn mower and weed eater gasoline and oil should be replaced, along with trimmer string. Hedge clippers may need to be sharpened or plant food replenished. Look over the garden hose for leaks or kinks. Gardening gloves should be replaced if they have holes or tears. Make sure there are no leaks in the gasoline container or in bags holding grass seed or fertilizer.

5. In addition to mowing and trimming items, don't forget to check the edger, post digger, spade, trowel, and other tools to be sure they work correctly. It doesn't hurt to look over the storage areas for signs of pest invasions. You don't want carpenter ants, termites, or mice gnawing your tools and supplies.

Make a list of recommended monthly maintenance items and post it on the shed door or in the garage. You may want to laminate it for longer wear. Organize tools and equipment safely and sensibly for easy location and use. You may want to add telephone numbers of suppliers and repair shops for quick reference.

Maintaining an attractive lawn can be time consuming, but overall the effort is worth it. A comfortable, well-manicured property reflects a responsible owner and a happy neighborhood.
