Not too many years ago, adding lighting fixtures to your landscaping required digging up your entire yard and wiring it with electricity, an awful lot of work, and if you had someone else do it for you ¨C quite expensive besides.  While this is still an option, it is no longer your only option. Eventually solar lighting was developed.  For several more years, lantern type fixtures that could be staked into the ground were the only style design choice for homeowners wanting the solar lighting for their landscaping.  These are still a great alternative, but of course, they must be in an area that will receive sunlight to charge them.  

If you want to add lighting to an area thick with bushes or tall flowers or grasses, you probably would be better off going with the older method of laying electrical wiring in pipes under ground. Recessed lighting or spotlights work very well in these types of areas as they will give off the most focused light in a confined or crowded area. Solar lighting, however, is much less expensive and has come a long way in just the past couple of years.  It is easy to find all kinds of different solar lighting appliances at your local garden center or in the gardening department of most stores. Solar lighting has moved from the standard lantern type fixtures used to line driveways or walkways to beautiful statuary that soaks up the sun¡¯s rays during the day to illuminate your yard at night. 

These days you can find fairies, animals, mushrooms, and even birdbaths that are made to be illuminated by the energy of the sun.  Although some of these do not give off much more light other than to illuminate the statue itself, others do.  You will need to check with the manufacturer¡¯s information to find out just how much light each of these items gives off.  Rope lights are also very popular.  Although these got their start as Christmas decorations, rope lights have gained a year round reputation. Rope lights, of course, have to be plugged in.  This can be done with extension cords, but unless you can keep the cords hidden somehow, it isn¡¯t very attractive. 

To use lights such as these or other types of light strands, you should go ahead and provide underground electrical outlets.  This will require the digging of trenches in order to lay pipe and wiring.  If you do not have any electrical experience, it is highly suggested you hire someone with an electrical license to do the work for you.  You can cut your costs however, by digging the trenches yourself.  You will need to first find out from the electrician the best places for the electricity to come out from your home or garage, then you will need to dig the trenches to wherever you want the outlets in your yard.

Strings of lights are not just for Christmas anymore.  However, if you are going to use light strings, it is very highly recommended to use plenty of lights, don¡¯t be cheap ¨C one or two strings of lights in a tree looks tacky.  Use of trunk light wraps makes your work easier and covers a lot of space at one time. Individual branches should be wrapped completely.  Bushes can also be covered in net lights.  Clear lights go with any holiday or season.  Make sure the lights you purchase are of high quality and are the ¡°stay lit¡± variety. (When one bulb goes out, the rest of the string stays lit.)  When using these lights, maintenance and upkeep are important.  Check the lights monthly for burned out bulbs and replace them.  Make sure the wire covering is not frayed or worn away anywhere.

There are many different ways in which you can illuminate your yard: line the driveway, sidewalks, paths and walkways, encircle trees and bushes, or use spotlighting to highlight a certain feature of your landscape.  Fountains in ponds as well as birdbaths can be illuminated. Find some illuminated statuary that goes along well with your lawns personality. The key to illumination is moderation.  Too little lighting will come across as a failed attempt; too much lighting will create a look of chaos, but a high energy bill besides.
