Landscape lighting can be used to highlight specific areas of your yard such as a walkway, deck, patio, driveway, plant, pond, or other structure. Landscape lighting can provide your home with additional beauty, security, and safer access near entry ways. Most people shy away from incorporating lights into the landscape simply because they believe it is too complex; however, installation of lights is actually quite simple, and nearly anyone can do it. Educating yourself on the basics of landscape lighting will help to ¡®shed some light¡¯ on any future lighting design projects with which you may be considering.

There are many options available when choosing outside lighting. Low-voltage lighting kits, found in most home centers, are generally recommended and include the basic components that you will need. These lighting systems are safe and energy efficient and there are many types to choose from. They are also designed for use in dry or wet environments. It¡¯s often a good idea to familiarize yourself with each component before installing and, of course, read and follow all instructions carefully. The transformer is the power source for your lighting system. It converts electricity into voltage. The low-voltage cables come in several gauges, but the 12-guage wire is more commonly used. Wire connectors are used to secure the various lighting connections.

Landscape lighting comes in many styles and various techniques can be employed for different illumination effects. The most popular technique is called up lighting, which focuses light and attention on a specific object creating dramatic, eye-catching interest. Fixtures are usually placed away from or below the object. This effect is often used for highlighting plants or architectural structures. There are three common styles of up lighting. Grazing is an effect that is achieved by placing fixtures close to a wall and pointing the light vertically. This effect highlights an object but the features are less exposed. Backlighting reveals the shape of an object and causes it to stand out against the background as a silhouette. Fixtures are put behind the object and pointed upward. Shadowing is done by placing the fixtures in front of an object with the light directed through it creating a shadow effect. Down lighting is another lighting effect that is generally used for security and aesthetics. The fixtures are often placed above an object to highlight a small area or single feature. Moonlighting is a form of down lighting that creates a natural moonlight effect by placing the fixture in a tree. Path lighting utilizes low fixtures that direct light down and outward. The fixtures are usually shielded to reduce glare and placed along walks, paths, or driveways. When path lighting is used, the fixtures can be concealed on the inside of plants that run along both sides of a walkway. Spacing these lights equally on either side will produce a runway effect. Other lighting effects include the use of floodlights, used to highlight trees; well lights, used to highlight a wall or other structure; or tier lighting, used for lighting various areas of the landscape and resemble lamp posts.

When installing low-voltage lighting, you should first determine which area you want to highlight and what type of lighting you will use. Check to make sure that there is an electrical outlet nearby. Also, take into consideration the type of fixtures and bulbs you will be using. Generally, halogen bulbs provide longer-lasting life than other bulbs as well as more wattage choices. Mount the transformer off the ground and close to the outlet. Connect the cable to the transformer and extend the cable from the transformer to each light. Place the cable and the light wires into the appropriate slots of the connector and clamp together. The cables can be concealed easily by burying it two or three inches in the ground. Cover the area with mulch or some type of ground cover. Plug the transformer into the outlet and turn it on.

Another alternative to outdoor lighting is the use of low-key lighting. This consists of solar landscape lighting, lanterns, candles, or strings of light. Subtle lighting in small areas such as patios or decks provide just enough light for entertaining and can be highlighted with plants or other features. With solar lighting, the sun¡¯s rays are stored during the day and lit at night to create a faint glow. Pedestal lanterns, employed with hooks or light posts, can illuminate garden paths. The use of storm lanterns, which house candles, can be incorporated as both an attractive feature and protection against breezes. Candles provide natural light and are a great way to add a touch of charm to the area.
