If your family is like many others in the world today, you may be realizing that our most precious beverage is one of the oldest of simplest: water. Water is crisp, clear and refreshing, not to mention calorie, fat and sodium free. It can also be expensive, especially if you give your family spring, mountain, or distilled water. These designer waters, while nowhere near the price of such beverages as soda pops and fruit drinks, still pack a wallop price wise, especially since, well, it is just water, right?

Many would disagree with that last statement. Chemicals, minerals, sediment and chlorine are often found in our everyday tap water. This prompts many people to invest in something which ensures them good quality drinking water. A hot and cold water dispenser, or, as it is more commonly known, a water cooler. Water coolers come in a variety of sizes and shapes, and with the capability for hot and cold running water. The question here is, where do I put it, and how¡¯s it going to look?

The first question is ¡®where will I put it?¡¯ The most obvious answer is- the kitchen. However, you may have to make some space arrangements. Measure whatever space you have available, and let the water company know what you are working with. This way, they can make suggestions based on their models. If possible, have a salesperson visit your home and make suggestions based on their product. You may find you have to shop around a bit before you find something to fit your taste. In addition to your water dispenser, most delivery services deliver 2 or more bottles of water at a time, and they must be stored properly in order to prevent algae, over heating, or freezing. For this reason, it is recommended to store your extra water bottles indoors, and out of direct sunlight. There are water bottle racks available, if you have the space, and if you don¡¯t, storing the extra bottles in unused space, such as the back of a coat closet, is ideal. The bottles should not leak, and optimally, should be kept in dark, cool places.

The second question, ¡®How¡¯s it going to look?¡¯ depends on your water company. Ask to see a brochure before signing up. There are many styles of dispensers available, as well as many different sizes and shapes of water bottles. Everything is available, from retro glass bottles to smaller lightweight square topped bottles. Depending on the style of your kitchen, you may choose a small, compact dispenser, or a larger family-style model.

One thing to consider is size of the water bottle. If you cannot lift the bottle, it will not fit onto the dispenser. Make sure that whatever size and style you choose, it is in harmony with both your lifestyle and your strength.

Be sure and keep your water dispenser out of direct sunlight. Sunlight filtered through glass is fine, but direct sunlight will cause chlorophyll to turn the water green, and, while harmless, it is certainly not appealing when served over ice.

Once everything is in place, you and your family can enjoy the convenience of hot drinking water on tap as well as cold, and you will be content in knowing that your family is being served the finest beverage available on earth.
