Many different materials can be used to make a liner for a wicker storage basket. Terry cloth is soft, yet sturdy, and towels come in all the latest colors. Buy an extra set of pillowcases or an extra flat sheet that matches an existing set to create lined baskets for a bedroom. Wallpaper makes an interesting liner, and there are plenty of different styles, colors, and textures of fabrics from which to choose. Faux leather, suede, canvas, denim, rich velvet, or delicate satin will add another layer of texture.
One of the simplest ways to line a basket is by draping a piece of fabric inside the basket -much like a sling- then cutting it to size. It should touch the edge on both sides and skim the bottom of the basket. Fold over the edges and hem them. Make buttonholes or add grommets and weave coordinating ribbon in and out every other hole. Leave enough excess ribbon at each end to tie a bow at each corner. This will keep the fabric in place.
Another simple way to make a lining is to turn the basket upside down and place a piece of fabric over it, inside out. Pin the fabric tightly in place against the basket. After pinning each side, remove the fabric and sew just inside the pinned lines. Be sure to hem the top for a nice smooth edge. To add a drawstring, place the string against the material and fold the hem over it. Pin in place and sew up to where the two ends of the string meet. Leave a one-inch opening. Cut the fabric and sew around the edges, or make a buttonhole, and push the ends of the string through so they are on the outside of the liner.
Next, turn the liner right-side out and place it inside the basket. It should fit well, but for a tighter fit, turn it inside out again and mark each seam a quarter inch to a half inch from the original line of stitches. Sew the new seam and check the fit. Once the basic liner is complete, add lace or trim if desired. For a decorative touch, as well as to help keep the liner in place, sew ribbon to each corner of the liner and tie to the corners of the basket.
For a more tailored liner, measure the bottom and each side of the basket from the inside. The fabric should be one half inch larger than the measurement on all sides. For example: if the bottom of the basket measures ten inches by fourteen inches, the piece of fabric should measure eleven inches by fifteen inches; this allows extra room for hems and seams. Fold the fabric over about one half inch and iron it down. The crease will create a line to follow to help keep stitches straight when hemming.
Seam two pieces of fabric together by opening the folds and sewing them together as close to the crease as possible. Make sure the ”°good”± sides are facing each other before beginning to sew. When finished sewing, turn right side out and place the liner in the basket. Decorate to taste. Another simple method is to glue wallpaper to the inside of the basket. Using a glue gun will make the task neater and easier.
First, measure the inside of the basket carefully. Measure the bottom and all sides. If you want the good side of the wallpaper to show inside and out, cut the paper twice the size of your measurements, adding at least a quarter inch to each side after that so the seams will overlap a bit.
Glue the pieces of wallpaper together until they form the shape of the basket. After a few minutes, when the form has had a chance to stabilize, you can glue it to the inside of the basket. Hot glue lace, beads, or trim to the edges. This method can also be used with sturdy fabric. Basket liners are simple and inexpensive to make, and they and can be updated often to compliment any design plan. |
