Thanks to the Easter Bunny and Thumper, rabbits have become the cuddly animal most children envision as a perfect pet--but ask a gardener about their sentiments regarding rabbits, and you¡¯ll often receive a frustrated sigh.
Although wild rabbits generally live only a year or two, they can do incredible amounts of destruction to a vegetable or flower garden in that time. They also find the bark of young trees and woody shrubs to be particularly appetizing, making them a potential threat to most anything growing in your yard.
If you find yourself at odds with a rabbit, there are several things you can try to either discourage their visits, or remove their presence completely:
FENCING
Build a 2-3 foot tall barrier out of 1 inch mesh fencing, often called chicken wire. You can surround your garden or individual plants, depending on what kind of garden you have. The height will keep rabbits from jumping over, and the small mesh will prevent them from chewing. You can also try plastic tubing or a mesh fencing around the base of tender trees or shrubs.
REPELLENTS
There are several types of odor/taste repellents on the market today for use in your garden. The majority of repellent products contain the chemical thiram. Although this is very effective as a rabbit deterrent, care should be taken that it is not used on or near vegetable gardens - or any other place you are growing a plant intended for human consumption.
LIVE TRAP
Another way to rid your garden of rabbits is to set up a live trap to catch the animal. The effectiveness of this depends on the type of bait used, the determination of the rabbit, and how far away the rabbit is taken after it is trapped.
NATURAL PREDATORS
Snakes, hawks, and owls are predators of the rabbit. If you live in an area where these animals can gather, find ways to increase their natural habitat. With a little work from you, these predators will swiftly eliminate your rabbit problem.
RABBIT HABITAT
Rabbits make their homes in woodpiles, brush, stacks of rubbish, and any other structure close to the ground that they can hide in or under. By eliminating these shelters, you can effectively reduce your rabbit population.
HOME REMEDIES
Home remedies often have questionable results, but are frequently put to use by frustrated gardeners who have had little luck with other methods, and are willing to try anything. These include making use of things that offend a rabbit¡¯s sense of smell such as bloodmeal, marigolds, or human hair. Other ways of deterring rabbits require placing items in your garden that resemble natural predators, such as a rubber hose which looks like a snake, or overhead moving garden d¨¦cor, which the rabbits often mistake for hawks or owls.
By trying one or several of these suggestions in your garden, you are bound to find a solution to your problem. In no time at all, you will be enjoying a healthy vegetable and flower garden again without the destruction of any rabbits. |
