A green lawn is the goal of many homeowners. To some it is an obsession. Keeping your lawn green just takes some patience and some work. The basis of lawn care starts at the establishment. Then the maintenance is where you can fine tune your lawn to green perfection. It is also important not to forget the dormant period because the lawn that is under all that snow is going to be the lawn you see in the Spring. You can have a green, healthy lawn without going crazy. You just need to establish, maintain and winterize correctly.
Lawns can develop problem areas where the grass dies out or becomes overrun by bothersome weeds. In these cases it is time to establish new grass. The best time to plant grass seed depends on what part of the country you are in. For southern states it is best to plant in late spring or early summer. For the northern states it is best to plant in late summer or early fall. Be sure to test the nutrients in your soil before planting. You can choose one of three ways to start your grass: seed, plug, or sod. Most often seed is used and should be chosen according to the conditions of the area where it will be planted. Factors to consider are the traffic flow through the area, the amount of sun and the moisture. Once planted a mulch can be laid over to help keep the area moist. Plugs are small sections of grass that will be planted and then will spread as they grow. Sod is the fastest and easiest method as it can be laid any time of year and is eye pleasing from the start. Once you have chosen the method to establish your lawn, and tested your soil the only thing to do is to keep it moist and wait for it to grow.
Lawn maintenance is the part of a green lawn that causes the most headaches. Grass is either warm weather or cool weather. For warm weather grass the active period is summer and the cool weather active period is spring and fall. During the active period you should fertilize using organic matter or a slow release nitrogen fertilizer. Mowing can aid you in your fertilizing as the cut grass is a natural fertilizer and gives back up to 25% of what your lawn needs. You also want to avoid cutting the grass too short. The blades should be cut only one-third of their height at a time. Keeping grass taller helps it grow better and helps root development that crowds out weeds. Mow late in the day as this will lessen the stress on the lawn. Also avoid mowing when the grass is wet because this can cause soil erosion or compaction and result in sickly grass. Watering can be come a compulsion and easily overdone. Your lawn needs only one inch of water at a time and should only be watered one time a week. Keep it moist, not soaked. In drought conditions you may need to actually test the soil and adjust the amount of watering as needed. Do not go overboard on your lawn chores.
Do not forget about the grass in winter. Remove weeds by hand that are thriving so they do not multiply over the winter. Rake leaves as they fall so they do not block air flow to the grass. Do not leave grass to long because the snow will cause it to bend over and reduce air circulation. Any restriction of air flow can cause mold and disease. Fertile and reseed two times before winter sets in. The three most important nutrients your lawn needs are phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium. Phosphorus helps make strong root and fight diseases. Nitrogen is what gives the lawn a nice green color and also fights diseases. Potassium gives protection from harsh winter temperatures. Make sure all three are well balanced and at the correct levels. Check with a local garden center to find the correct levels for your area. Taking the time to prepare your lawn for winter will pay off big time in the spring, not to mention save you from spring problems.
A green lawn is not out of your reach. You can be the envy of the neighborhood. First establish a good lawn with healthy soil. Then treat your lawn good with proper maintenance. Finally, prepare your lawn for the cold winter months. As long as you have established and maintained a nice lawn you don't have to chase people and pets off your lawn - they wont hurt it, so go ahead and remove your "keep off the grass sign. You now know the secrets to a beautiful, green lawn. |
