Many lawns are susceptible to dry spots and low moisture retention. They usually require frequent watering and lack the green appearance of a healthy lawn. This problem can be solved with the installation of an underground lawn sprinkler system. Installing a home irrigation system can be a challenging task but if it is carefully planned it will be worth the effort. If you are planning to install an underground lawn sprinkler system, here is an outline of how you can do the job like a professional.
Before you begin the installation process, it is important to check for any underground utility wires. You should also determine if there are any codes or permits that are required for your town or residential area. You will also need to find out about your water pressure, water meter size or well pump size, water service line size, water flow rate, and backflow prevention requirements. This data is necessary to determine if your water supply can support an underground lawn sprinkler system. Most of this information is available at your county office.
When you have gathered all the required information, you can begin planning the layout of the underground sprinkler system. If your lawn is interspersed with trees mounted bird feeders, fences, embedded lawn ornaments etc. it will be necessary to install independent sets of pipes and sprinkler heads as a circuit. Each circuit will have its own control valve and a manifold controls each independent set. Measure and map the landscape carefully, mark where the manifold and sprinklers will be placed. Avoid slopes and corners, as this will decrease water pressure.
Plan the sprinkling system to ensure that there is a slight overlap from the spray of each sprinkler. This will ensure that all areas are properly watered. Sprinkler heads come in a variety of sizes and styles. The type of sprinkler head you choose will be determined by your specific needs, i.e., under shrubs, beside flowerbeds, proximity to sidewalks etc. Your local hardware store dealer can help you decide which sprinkler head would be appropriate for your particular needs. You will also need other specific parts for the installation project. These are valves, risers, fittings or couplings, a manual control, a backflow preventer, timers, the valve manifold, and PVC pipe.
Before you begin digging and installing, lay out markers on the ground based on the map you designed. You can dig the trenches for the lines and sprinklers with a rented trencher or a garden spade. The trenches should be dug deep enough to prevent damage to the sprinklers when they are not in operation. After all the trenches have been dug, layout and preassemble all the parts. Place the PVC pipelines in the trenches using the manifold as your starting point. Connect the sprinkler heads according to the manufacturer¡¯s instructions. Connect the irrigation system to either your water service line or your outdoor faucet. Install the backflow peventer following the manufacturer¡¯s guidelines. Finally, install the timer to control when you want each circuit watered.
After you have installed the system, run a test to detect any problems. During the year, check the system for corrosion and wear. Another factor that needs to be considered is that winter weather will cause any residual water in the system to freeze, expand and break the lines. This can be avoided by making sure that the lines are water free after the watering season is over. Ask your local hardware dealer for information on how this can be done.
Installing an underground lawn sprinkler system will take more than a few days. It is best not to hurry the job but to reserve enough time to get it done precisely and correct the first time. This will eliminate a lot of redesigning. The results will be a hassle free irrigation system that will give you many years of controlled watering and a lush lawn. |
