Recessed lighting is an inconspicuous addition that will help brighten up any kitchen. An abundance of different recessed lighting styles gives the homeowner many choices for any style of kitchen remodeling projects. With a little patience, and a few hours, even the novice do-it-yourself person will be able to install recessed lighting. Consider a few things before you decide to install the recessed lighting yourself. Access to the ceiling, from the floor above, will definitely make your work easier, but do not be afraid to do the installation from below. Location to a power source is also something that should be given some careful thought. If you want to install the recessed light over an existing fixture this will make the wiring an easy task. You probably will have to engage the help of a professional, if there is no existing fixture, to help in running a power source to your lights location. If you're feeling extremely ambitious, your local hardware store may be able to assist you in directions of how to lay the wire for your project. The obvious benefit to doing it yourself would be a substantial savings, but if there is any doubt, please bring in an electrician.  

IMPORTANT: You should purchase an insulation-contact (IC) rated recessed light fixture. If the light fixture is not ¡°IC,¡± rated, and the light comes in contact with insulation, a serious fire could happen. If there is no insulation near the place you want to install the recessed lighting you should be ok with a fixture that is not ¡°IC,¡± rated.  Disconnect the power.

1.You will need to cut an opening for the placement of the light. Take an electronic stud locator, and find the ceiling joists. Be sure to mark the location of the joists, and place, and then trace the outline of the light onto the ceiling. The ideal tool for making the cut would be a drywall saw or a drywall circle cutter; now cut the opening. Take the electrical cable and slide it into the wire connection box, and secure it into place with a cable clamp. If needed, take the wires and strip off the ends, and then connect them to the lighting fixture using wire connectors. Take the light fixtures black wire, and connect it to the black wire from the house, then the white wire will go the white wire, and the ground connects to the ground.

2. Take the light fixture housing and push it into place in the ceiling making sure it is firmly in place. 

3. Following the manufacturers requirements, install the inner baffle to the light fixture housing. Select the appropriate light bulb and install. Turn power back on. You are done.

Recessed lighting adds to the beauty of a remodeled kitchen or it can add to the look and feel of an existing kitchen. Installing recessed lighting is slightly more difficult than installing a regular light fixture. But by following the steps above, and by adhering to the manufacturers directions, your installation of recessed lighting should run smoothly.
