Installing solar energy lighting

Do you have dark areas in your yard? Do you want to extend your time outdoors past dusk? Would you like to solve both these problems with just a little investment of time and money? Solar energy lighting offers a great option. In fact, the ease of installation makes solar lighting the answer for people looking to brighten their yard and outdoor living spaces easily. 

Solar energy lights are super easy to install. Most homeowners can set up an entire landscape lighting scheme in a few hours with the aid of only a tape measure, mallet, screwdriver or drill, and, sometimes, a shovel. Before we discuss installation, though, it helps to know what types of lights are currently on the market. 

If the last time you looked at solar lights, all you saw were little airport runway-type fixtures, it¡¯s time to take another look. Solar energy lighting now comes in a dizzying array of finishes and styles. Newer lights, which use LEDs (light emitting diodes), also offer brighter light that lasts longer with less energy input.

Solar light fixture types include lampposts, stake-mounted, wall-mounted, lighted flagpoles, flood lights, floating pond lights, sculptures with light features built in, lighted stepping stones, and post tops. From copper-colored plastic to commercial die-cast aluminum, solar lights also come in a wide variety of finishes.

Your choice of fixture depends on its intended use. You can light paths with stake-mounted lights or stepping stones. Porches and decks can benefit from the soft glow of wall-mounted lanterns and deck post tops. Solar, LED spotlights (uplights) can highlight garden features, including sculptures or topiaries. You can also add accents to your yard with a lighted flagpole, lamppost, solar sculpture or floating solar lamps. If you need utility lighting, solar floodlights are now also available.

There are many other things to think about before purchasing a solar lighting set. You should consider whether solar lights will work where you want them. For instance, a solar light on a covered porch won¡¯t be as bright as one on an uncovered patio. Some solar lights have switches (handy in case you want to stargaze). Fixtures may also have replaceable batteries so you can use them for many years. Some need to be assembled, with the most complicated just snapping together to finish up installation. For flexibility, you should also choose lights with both stakes and wall-mount options so you can move the lights up out of the snow during the winter months. 

Once you have examined your location and chosen your fixtures, it¡¯s time to install your solar lights. First, you¡¯ll need to measure and mark your light locations. Mark off where you want the lights to go (you can use landscapers¡¯ paint or simply note the spot with a small rock). You should space them evenly and symmetrically for a more traditional appearance or randomly for an informal scheme. To avoid the ¡°UFO look,¡± you might want to stagger rows on either side of a path. You also don¡¯t want to overdo it by putting in too many lights too close together.
