Insulating hot and cold water pipes in your homes is a moderately difficult job for the average homeowner. But it can bring you an immediate return on your investment of time and sweat equity because insulating exposed pipes saves energy by reducing radiated heat loss from hot water pipes. Expensive water damage from burst attic water pipes that freeze during cold winter months can be prevented. These guidelines can help make your installation efficient and successful.

Supplies and tools you¡¯ll need include a ladder, coverall, hat, work gloves, dust masks, utility knife, serrated knife, 10x12¡± boards, several rolls of duct tape, rags, a wire brush, sandpaper, paper towels, drinking water and household cleanser. Make an estimate of the amounts of pipe wrap insulation you¡¯ll need, adding 10% as an ¡°X¡± factor n case you make a mistake. It¡¯s a good idea to do this beforehand because the job of cleaning pipes located in the attic can be very hot work. Use the 10x12¡± boards as a standing platform for you and your ladder so you don¡¯t compress insulation batts or fall through the ceiling. And wiggling through the crawlspaces littered with construction debris, encountering exotic crawling and web-spinning creatures should only be undertaken once. 

At your home center or hardware store buy as many rolls of the self-adhesive tape insulation you¡¯ll need, plus the ¡°X¡± factor. Better to have too much than two little, especially when you¡¯re in that crawlspace. The rolls come in lengths providing about 30 feet of coverage depending upon the size of pipe and your technique. Rolls cost about $10, depending upon the area in which you live. 

The first step is to carefully remove all rust from the pipes with a wire brush and sandpaper. Brush or scrape off accumulated dust, dirt and grease with a putty knife and rags. It¡¯s important to clean the pipe surfaces thoroughly with a household cleanser or the applied tape may fail. Let dry. Do this a section at a time to prevent dust in the air from settling back on the pipe.

Take the rolled tape, begin at one end and wrap it around the pipe. Slightly overlap the next revolution, about a quarter of its width, and continue on until the you reach the end of the roll. Overlap the end of the previous roll with a wrap of the new roll. Do the same when wrapping elbows, bends and t-joints. Secure all ends with duct tape as a safety measure. 

Once the tape is in place, double check all the joints to make sure that everything is sealed correctly and that all the ends are secured with duct tape. If done correctly and depending upon the concessions in the areas of application, the insulating tape should last for a few years.
