Any parent¡¯s worst nightmare is that something bad may happen to their child. Making your home a safe place for your children is the best thing you can do to help prevent this from happening. One way to keep your children safe in your home is to install child safety latches on all the doors and windows that a child may gain access to.
There are several ways to keep doors from being opened or closed by your child:
The first type of door latch is to prevent a child from opening a door. This latch is a plastic door knob cover that simply snaps over the existing door knob. In order to open the door, two buttons on either side of the cover must be pushed in while turning the knob. Most children do not have the dexterity or ability to do these things at the same time and thus can not open the door. The cover turns uselessly in their little hands.
Another type is for sliding doors. This latch requires no drilling so it is able to be used on all types of sliding doors. The latches adhere to the door with included adhesive up against where the door slides into the other part. The two sides must be pushed down to allow the sliding door to slide.
A third way to keep children safe with doors is to use child safety gates. These will allow for doors to remain open and adults to be able to pass through the door without a child getting through. There are numerous types of gates to fit all situations.
One new way to keep your children from opening doors is a door alarm. This alarm installs with adhesive to the door frame. When the door is opened, the alarm will sound, scaring the child away from the door. This is best used with older children. This alarm has the ability to be turned off.
Another way to keep your child from pinching his or her fingers in the door is called a door finger protector. It is made of soft flexible material and is placed in the hinge side of the door. It automatically engages while in the active position and will not accidentally lock while the door is closed. Kidco also makes a similar product that fits in the door jam to prevent fingers from being pinched.
Kidco also makes special doorstops to keep doors open. This doorstop fits all doors up to 1 ? inches in width. It comes with a pad to install on the bottom for hardwood or tile floors, but is not needed for carpeting. Simply slide the door onto the doorstop and it holds it in place. To release it, you simply step on the doorstop and pull the door.
There are also several ways to keep windows safe for your child:
One type of window latch is the window wedge. This wedge works on both sliding windows and double hung windows and attaches with adhesive. This latch adheres to the spot where the window would move, either at the bottom of the top half or against the spot on a sliding window where the window enters the other part. It must be squeezed to allow for the window to move. This type of latch also works to keep windows open to a certain point.
Another type of window latch is made by Safety First. This latch is intended to keep the window open to a certain point (for double hung windows only). The latch attaches to the frame of the window at the bottom. There is then a small arm that rotates from the base to keep the window open to a maximum of 3 inches to allow for ventilation.
A third way to keep your children safe around windows is to install child safety bars on your windows. Whereas these are not the most attractive of methods, they will keep your child from falling from an open window. This method may not be for everyone as it also could hinder rescue efforts in the instance of a fire.
Having children is a special gift and should not be taken for granted. They can never be replaced, so it is best to make your home as safe as possible for your children. These are all easy ways to ensure your child¡¯s safety. |
