Being an avid gardener, I love to grow all kinds of plants and flowers.  Among my favorites are herbs.  Fresh herbs add so much to your meals, not to mention the incredible scent some of them add to your home.  Unfortunately, in the area that I live, the winter months will not allow me to grow any plants outdoors.  In an effort to bring my plants inside I decided to install a kitchen garden window.  With the right type of lighting you will be able to grow your own plants to help you through those frigid winter months.  Some indoor window gardens require the use of fluorescent lights especially if natural sunlight is a problem. 

Your kitchen garden window can be as easy to make as installing a few basic shelves and using some spare dishes or containers as elaborate as you want to use to put your plants in.  You can use dishes that have your favorite china pattern on it to beautify your new kitchen garden window. 

Some materials you will need to begin this project are: shelving material (glass, wood or wire mesh); spare dishes to plant your plants in; seeds or potted plants; potting soil; finishing nails; hammer; level; and sandpaper.  

Start by measuring your window and cutting your shelves accordingly.  Allow enough space between your shelves for your plants to grow.  Some windows are inset about four to five inches into the wall.  This creates a deep sill and side jambs.  Most are framed in wood underneath the drywall so you can attach molding directly to the window jambs and inset your shelves.

If your windows are not inset you can still add shelves.  You will need to buy brackets to install the shelves on both sides of the window.  

Measure to determine where to place your shelves.  

Cut your wood for your shelves.  If you would rather use glass shelves to give your window an airy feeling, be sure to find out how much weight your glass shelf will hold.  Be sure to have the edges finished.  

Cut two pieces of molding for each shelf to make a shelf bracket.  Sand the edges and paint the wood to match your window frame.

Attach molding bracket to the first side of the window by using your finishing nails.  Use a level to be sure the molding has no tilt.  

Level the first shelf and attach the shelf bracket to the other side of the window.  

Repeat with each shelf bracket until your shelves are in place.

Find mismatched sets of mugs and bowls to plant your seeds in or you can use something with your favorite china pattern on it.

Drop rocks in the bottom of each pot to allow for drainage and plant your kitchen garden window.

Install fluorescent lights if needed.

In no time at all you will be enjoying adding your favorite herbs to the dishes that you prepare, or if you don¡¯t plant herbs, you will be seeing your favorite plants growing.
