Need extra storage space?   Adding a shelf in the closet is a quick and easy way to boost your storage space and keep your home organized.   Having a space for everything, and everything in it¡¯s place makes for an organized living space.   You¡¯ll have much more time for the activities you enjoy if you eliminate time spent searching for the supplies you want.  With a few simple steps, you can capture valuable unused space above a closet rod.  If your closet has no unusual features, this project can be done in about one hour.

Before You Begin

To make this project go as smoothly as possible, develop a plan, determine your supplies and assemble your tools before you start.  When planning your shelf, consider the space available and the items you want to store.   One of the most important tasks will be determining what kind of wall you will working with.   In order to choose  the correct wall anchors and drills, you must check to see if your wall is plaster, sheetrock or masonry.  Decide on  the appropriate length and depth for your project and make sure the shelf is designed to hold the weight of your stuff.  Be sure to take measurements with you when you are shopping. Some basic tools you¡¯ll want to have on hand are:

Slotted and Phillips head screw drivers, 

Power drill, with assorted drill bits, 

Circular Saw

Hammer

Level 

Step Ladder

Two types of shelving are appropriate for this kind of project.   The traditional solid shelf held by brackets and standards affixed to the wall is a simple solution available at any hardware store.   Ventilated systems are newer, readily available products  which hang from a single horizontal support.  This vinyl clad wire shelving is lighter and tends to sag less.  The ventilated shelves also allow for air circulation and keep your stored items smelling fresh and less musty.  ClosetMaid¡¯s ventilated track system offers an extensive line of accessories and specialized fittings for even the most complicated closet.  You can find these at most mega-home improvement stores such as Lowe¡¯s or Home Depot.  The single support design was originated by elfa (tm), exclusively available through the Container Store, a home organizing specialty supplier.  Both products are available in standard depth from 12' to 20".  The Container Store offers several valued added services such as complimentary closet design and cutting of shelves to help consumers plan the most efficient storage systems and choose the proper components for the project.  Check your local home improvement stores to see what services are available in your area.

Because the shelving is supported by a single horizontal ¡°track¡±, it is easier to install and far more versatile.   From the support track, vertical  ¡°standards¡± can be hung anywhere along the track.   This is helpful when there are uneven surfaces or obstacles where you are hanging your shelf.   This system allows for easy reconfiguration and future expansion without the need for drilling,  when your needs change.  Installation is easier since you need to level just one horizontal track.   The n umber of standards and shelf brackets is determined by the length of your self. Check the specific manufacture¡¯s recommendations to figure out how many you need, but a general rule of thumb is one bracket about every three feet.   You will need:

One support track, 

Wall Anchors appropriate for your walls

Two to three standards (according to manufacture¡¯s recommendations), 

Ventilated Shelf,  cut to size,

Shelf brackets  (according to manufacturer¡¯s recommendations)

Costs

Single support ventilated systems are available either in sets or individual pieces.   Sets are helpful for most common closet projects because they already include all the parts you need and are usually discounted.  If you have an unusual configuration, individual parts can be more efficient.   Be sure to take your closet measurements with you!   Basic closet kits begin at about $100.  Some large systems for home theater, kitchen pantries or garages can cost as much as $1500. 

For a single shelf you¡¯ll need one standard, about $15.  Two or three standards cost about $10 each.  Shelf price depends on width and length but an average cost is less than $20.  Brackets are about $3 each.   Wall anchors and screws will run about $5.  Total cost for a shelf 48" or less will be about $50-$60.  Many accessories are available to customize and maximize your storage.  Pull out wire storage baskets can be added to the standards.  To reduce dust, acrylic shelf covers are helpful. 

Installation 

If you are installing your shelf above a clothing rod, be sure to leave enough space to comfortably hang or remove hangers, about two inches.   To begin installation, decide where you want your shelf.  For the single track systems, your support can be anywhere above your shelf that is convenient.   It can be placed just a few inches below the ceiling to a few inches above the shelf.   If there is adequate clearance, the system makes it a snap to add a second shelf with no tools.  Measure down from the ceiling approximately every 12" from right to left and mark the correct distance. Connect your marks and using the level, ensure your line is level.   Once you¡¯ve made sure your line is level, the rest of the project is a snap.   Drill pilot holes and tap in your anchors.  Place the support track over the drilled holes and apply the screws.   (If you have self tapping anchors, skip the pre-drilling step).  

Once the support track is installed, place the standards evenly along the length of the track and snap in.  At this point, review the desired height of your shelf and snap the brackets into the standards.   Making sure the shelf is level is easily accomplished by counting the holes in the standards and placing each bracket at the same level.   Now you are ready to apply the ventilated shelf.  Center it in the desired position and snap into the brackets.
