Installing a ceiling fan can be easy if you follow some common instructions. First you will need some tools: a screwdriver, a drywall saw, pliers or a wrench, and a drill.
Selecting the position of the fan is important. In order to receive the most benefit from the fan it should be placed in the middle of the ceiling for equal coverage of the room. Regardless of where you install it, make certain there is nothing around the fan that might impede the fan blades as they rotate. The fan should also be located under a ceiling joist so that the fan will be secured firmly to the ceiling. Few things are worse than a fan flying off the ceiling. The ceiling joist can be located with a stud finder tool or by measuring from an exterior wall. Most joists are 16¡± apart.
The next step is to make certain you have access to electricity. The electrical wiring must come across the ceiling and be available at the fan¡¯s entry point. If you have a light on your fan you will want to have the ceiling wires connected to the room¡¯s light switch. The fan usually comes with a description of the width of the ceiling entry hole. It should be large enough for an electrical outlet box to fit. Once you are certain of the location draw the appropriate outline on the ceiling and cut with a drywall saw. Drill a hole into the exposed joist through holes in the outlet box and attach the box to the joist with screws. Then thread the electrical wires through the outlet box.
Now, from your fan¡¯s equipment locate the metal ceiling plate. This is what attaches the fan securely to the ceiling. Thread the electrical wires through the ceiling plate. Place the ceiling plate on the bottom of the outlet box and drill pilot holes through the outlet box using the predrilled holes in the ceiling plate as your guide. Then attach the ceiling plate to the ceiling joists with screws.
Often the fan¡¯s motor housing is already attached to the motor. If not now is the time to do so according to the manufacturer¡¯s guidelines. Once this is accomplished attach the motor and housing to the fan attachment. This is a pipe that connects the fan motor to the ceiling plate. The pipe is threaded at both ends and screws into the motor housing and the ceiling plate.
Screw the pipe into the ceiling plate making certain the electrical wires come through the ceiling pipe. Now slide the ceiling canopy over the pipe and attach. It usually attaches to the pipe with some type of nut holding the canopy to the ceiling and the pipe. Some screw sets may also be involved. This canopy covers the hole in the ceiling.
Now you have a pipe with electrical wires dangling from the end. And a canopy covering the hole in the ceiling. It is time to do the electrical wiring.
First disconnect power to this outlet by tripping the appropriate circuit breaker. Next tilt and hang the fan motor off one end of the ceiling plate. If this is not possible find a helper to hold the fan in such a way that you can connect the motor¡¯s wiring to the ceiling wiring. In most cases all you need to do is connect a fan wire of one color to a ceiling wire of the same color. Do this by twisting together bare metal ends of the wires. Then place a wire nut (small plastic covers available at any hardware store) over the connected wires and tighten clockwise. Once all the wires are connected gently push the wires into the outlet box. If this wiring step is all too confusing or uncertain for you, then call a professional electrician. Incorrect wiring can create a fire hazard.
Now you are ready to hang the fan on the ceiling plate. Swing the fan up and align the holes in the fan with holes in the ceiling plate. Your helper will be glad for this step as the fan is getting heavy. With the holes aligned secure with the appropriate screws.
The fan is now securely attached to the ceiling. If it isn¡¯t then go back and start over. You don¡¯t want the fan coming off the ceiling while it is spinning. You can now attach the fan blades. Blades are always attached to the fan motor and housing by aligning holes in the blade with holes in the housing and secured with mounting screws. There may be a metal plate connecting the blades to the housing. These too are usually connected with some type of mounting screw.
The blades are attached, but you are not quite finished. You still have to connect the switch housing. First attach the switch housing plate to the bottom of the fan. This usually attaches with mounting screws. Or it screws on to a threaded pipe coming from the bottom of the fan¡¯s housing. Then attach the switch housing to the switch housing plate. Once again use the given mounting screws. Manufacturers use a variety of methods to get electricity to the switch. Follow the manufacturer¡¯s guideline for this step. It will involve some more wiring skills. Just remember color to color and electrical nuts.
You¡¯re almost done. Turn on the circuit breaker to restore the power. Then use all the switches on the fan to make certain it works properly. If it has a light be sure to check that. And don¡¯t forget the blades rotate as well as counter-clockwise. That done, sit back, get some iced tea and enjoy the cooling breezes of your new ceiling fan.
