Installing a perimeter security system is easier said than done. If it must be a do-it-yourself project help yourself out and buy the best product you can afford. Actually it should be number one on the list of things to purchase.
Next you need to find out as much as you can about electrical wiring by reading texts related to security systems or by scanning the internet. Do not rely on your old uncle Joe who used to work for the telephone company to help you. Today's modern security systems are highly sophisticated affairs that do not suffer fools lightly.
Each security system comes complete with its own wiring instructions. Some come as complete or nearly complete modules that require very little guesswork. Some come with enough different colored wire sticking out here and there that would make a jigsaw puzzle pale by comparison. One must be prudent when purchasing a security system. Compare them carefully. Do not take on this type of challenge if you are not confident that you have the ability to do it in a competent way. It should go without saying that whatever reason or thing you need the security system for will be adequately protected by the way you put it together.
Once you have decided upon what type of security system you can buy, can install, and that will do what you need it to do it is time to plan how to set it all up. With camera surveillance you need to keep in mind that you want the most coverage you can get and that you want it to be as clear as possible. The clearest views possible will be minimally effective if they do not cover and adequate area. And if the cameras cover an adequate area built the views are fuzzy they too will be minimally effective.
When working with cameras remember to think high and to think low. If you want the perimeter to include several buildings you will need views from on high as well as camera shots beneath shrubbery etc. Be cautious about lighting. Sometimes lighting at night causes strange shadows which can obscure important details that are not apparent during the day.
With sound sensors you can be less demanding with placement but not much. Placement remains crucial but sound travels easier than vision most of the time.
The perimeter you choose should cover whatever you want secure in a blanket of sorts. And there should be no holes in this blanket if possible. Scrutinize every little possible area where there is a chance of a breakdown in the security perimeter. Some experts believe you should think like a rat. If the rat is in an area that can not be seen or heard, then some changes need to take place. The rat should not be able to escape the security perimeter. To some this may seem a bit odd but if carried out can actually be quite effective. After all that must be the way to think if you want to secure whatever it is that is so valuable to you.
