Choosing a new air cleaner for your home is a process which requires a bit of research before, during and after the actual purchase.
First, let¡¯s take a look at some of the reasons you might like to use an air filter machine in your home.
Many people find themselves with unspecified respiratory problems. Dry throat, coughing, headaches which come and go with the changing seasons are a good indicator of a seasonal allergies related to pollen, dust or mold. They can all be found in your home, regardless of how many disinfectant cleaners you use, or how careful you are about vacuuming, or keeping windows shut. Pollen and other particles like pollen are microscopic; invisible to the naked eye.
How then, you may ask, would you know if you have a problem with your air quality? Simple. Grab one of these machines on a trial basis. Many of them offer in-home trials, refunding your money if you don¡¯t think they¡¯ve improved your air quality. Molds are virtually invisible, and truly, the only particle you might be able to spot is a dust particle. The same goes for pollen and spores. They are airborne, arriving in your home through a window or door, or even on the coat of a visitor. Your shoes are carriers of everything on the street, as well as your outerwear. If you stop to think about it, with all the particles being brought inside your home, you¡¯d just as well be outside!
Some basic air filters, while inexpensive enough, may not be able to filter out the really small stuff. Small portable air filters may be enough to rid a room of the smell of smoke, for example, but may not be strong enough to filter out the harmful particles involved. They do improve air quality to some degree, however, and if you want to clean up your air without breaking the bank, there are many small, portable, affordable units available at most department stores. These units usually employ something called a HEPA filter. HEPA stands for High Efficiency Particular Air filter. Basically, this means that the particle has a hard way to go to get through one of these. Many vacuum cleaners are also equipped with these, and using one will greatly reduce the amount of irritants found in your home.
Central air conditioning units can also filter your air to a degree. While it is not the function for which it is designed, the air is circulated and filtered through both a refrigerant and a filter, making it somewhat more palatable to your respiratory system.
A very popular type of air purifier is the Ionic purifier, or electrofilter. Basically, the way these machines work is that there are electromagnetic charges which attract the particles in the air to stainless steel bars located inside the machine. These bars are attached to handle which can be removed for easy cleaning. There are a number of different types of these machines available, each employing its own brand of specialized electromagnetic Ion-based cleaning process. Be aware if decide to go this route that these machines are not inexpensive. The good news is that they usually offer a customer to try the machine in their own home first before buying.
If you think you suffer from a specific allergy, asthma, or if you smoke, a visit to your doctor is recommended before buying any filter. Your doctor may be able to recommend which machine is right for your particular sensitivity.
As always, research and compare. The prices are almost as varied as the types of machines available. Research, and breathe easy! |
