If you have an inground swimming pool in your back yard, then you must also have a pool cover. A pool cover provides safety from accidental fall-ins during the times when the pool is not in use. Children, especially the ones that are under the age of five, are the most susceptible to fall into and drown in an unprotected swimming pool. A cover can also protect your swimming pool from tree limbs, leaves, and other falling debris. A pool cover can also protect your pool from vandalism. Some models are "tamper proof" which means that the cover cannot be removed without having a special tool.
Swimming pool covers come in a few different styles, shapes, and price ranges. No matter which style you choose to use, though, they are basically lightweight and easy to install. Some covers are automatic, and are operated with a remote control system, while others are manually installed and removed. The automatic pool cover should ideally be installed when the inground pool is installed though, so that the remote control system can be hidden in the works of the pool. And, an automatic pool covers work best on rectangular-shaped pools.
Any type of pool cover will provide a certain amount of safety, but, if you do have small children, an actual "safety cover" will provide the maximum protection. Safety covers are made stronger than a normal-use cover so that they offer the best protection. They are also attached securely to the concrete apron, or, to a wooden deck surrounding your pool. In order to use this type of swimming pool cover, you must have at least a three foot wide strip of concrete or wood to secure the safety cover to.
Basically, manual pool covers are installed by attaching anchors into the concrete or wood material. The cover then lies on the surface of the water, and heavy duty springs, rubber tie downs, or specially-designed brackets hold the cover in place all of the way around its perimeter.
As for upkeep, some swimming pool covers are constructed of a lightweight mesh material. This type of material allows rainwater or thawed snow or ice to run through it. Therefore, there is no build-up of water on top of the cover that can stretch, rip, or tear it. Other models, however, are made of a material that holds water in top of it. This type of cover may need to have any accumulation of water removed. This is usually done by using a small water pump. Some covers even have drains installed in them for this use.
Most swimming pool covers are pre-treated with chemicals so they are pretty much resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria. They do need cleaned periodically because, when they are used year-round, they are always subject to getting dirty and being covered with debris. Covers must be removed from your swimming pool before they can be cleaned. Then, cleaning can be done by using a soft brush and a gentle cleanser. You can use your garden hose to thoroughly rinse the cleanser off of the cover. Be sure that you read and follow the manufacturer's directions so that you don't void your warranty.
