There is nothing like a refreshing dip in a swimming pool to while away the hours on a hot summer day.  Perhaps you are thinking of putting in a pool slide for your family to use and enjoy--so what do you need to know about pool slides before buying one?  There are some things to consider, such as price, installation, maintenance and safety issues.

     In ground pool slides come in a wide array of colors and styles, from the simplest to the most elaborate.  Slides come in colors besides the traditional aqua and white.  Slides can also be chosen according to the age of your children.  Smaller, more safe slides are available for toddlers or small children.  More elaborate slides are also available for older children and adults.  Pick the slide that is most appropriate for your children¡¯s ages.  

     The type of slide features to choose from is enormous.  You can go with a traditional left or right curving acrylic slide with an aluminum ladder, or try out one of the new polyethylene flumes, which are large 24-30¡± tubes and often come with an enclosed ladder for the safety of smaller children.  You can expect to pay anywhere from $650 for a simple slide to $2100 for a more elaborate set-up.  Whatever style of slide you choose, make sure you check out the warranty information (most come with a limited one year warranty), and verify that it meets or exceeds the U.S. consumer product safety commission regulations for pool slides.

     Some slides have a self-contained water lubrication system, and some need a separate pump for this feature.  Make sure you find out what you need for complete installation ahead of time.  Some manufacturers offer factory installation if you prefer it, but installing a pool slide is definitely possible for the do-it-yourself kind of person.  You will need some basic tools and a special anchor kit to anchor your slide to the deck next to your inground pool.  Most companies also offer technical assistance if you decide to do it yourself and then something goes wrong.   Either way, installation can be done in an afternoon by yourself or by a pool specialist.

     It is very important to care for and maintain your pool slide.  When you are doing your routine pool maintenance, do a visual inspection of your slide for any loose bolts, wear, rust, or anything else that would need to be repaired or replaced.  It is also suggested that you periodically clean your pool slide with warm, soapy water and some vigorous rubbing to clean pool chemicals and other debris left by the elements to maintain the integrity of your slide surface and ladder.  

     When it comes to safety with your new pool slide, use common sense.  Advise family and friends to go down the slide feet first only, not headfirst.  Children need to take turns and refrain from horseplay while on the slide or ladder.  Slide guards can be purchased for some types of slides, and it is a good idea to use it whenever the pool is not in use.  However, the best way to keep your family safe around your pool is with adequate parental supervision.
