When designing your home, several important elements need to be considered.  The amount of money you can spend, your personal needs, the part of the country you live in, as well as personal taste, will often dictate the outcome of your finished home.  It is important to consider all of these items in the planning stage of home design.  If any of the following factors are left out of the planning process, it could mean a great deal of pain and headache for both the designer and the homeowner.

Personal needs:  When designing a home, one must also consider their personal needs.  These include planning for the number of people who will share the home, both now and in the future, and planning according to your family¡¯s lifestyle and activities. These factors will dictate the size of the home as well as the amenities of the home.  For example, a family with six children who all play soccer will need an entirely different home than a family with one child who plays the piano.  The larger, more active family will need more bedrooms, bathrooms, a bigger yard and possibly a recreation room.  The smaller family may need a formal living room for the piano and only two bedrooms and one bathroom.

Personal style and taste: The final decisions for the home, which are the design elements, are affected by personal style and taste.  Personal style and taste will dictate whether the home has a formal or casual feel as well as the type of floor plan used in the design.  One thing a homeowner must consider, however, when designing a home according to their own tastes is that they may have to sell it at some point in the future, so if their tastes are extravagant or colorful, they may want to tone down the permanent elements of the home to make them more mainstream.

Location: Home design is also affected by the geological area in which the home is located.  One must consider whether they are in an area prone to natural disaster, fire, or just inclement weather, and plan appropriate preventative elements into the homes design.  In addition, the home design is also affected by the locality of the home within any region.  For example, an urban home in an older city will have to comply with strict building codes for historical accuracy, or a home in a suburban planned community may also be restricted by neighbor hood rules and covenants.
