Shelving is an important element in any well-organized house. Free-standing units can be hard to fit into small spaces, but, fortunately, you can squeeze hanging shelves into tight spaces, such as a wall in a corner of a laundry room. There are many ways to fasten wall shelves securely.

One common wall shelf fastens to the wall with a track. To install this type of shelf, you will need to measure the wall height so that you can buy the proper length of track. If you are fastening the tracks to drywall, you will need anchors and drywall screws. If you will be able to screw directly into the wall studs, you will not need anchors. Purchase two tracks, shelves, and a set of brackets for each shelf. Once you have purchased your materials, you are ready to hang the shelves. To balance the shelves, you will need to hang the tracks so that there is no more than six inches of shelf hanging beyond each track. Once you know where you want to place the tracks, fasten the top of each track to the wall with one screw. Then, check that the tracks are level and fasten the bottom of each track. Next, make sure you put a screw in each available hole. This ensures that your shelves will not suddenly pull away from the wall. Decide where you want to place each shelf and put the brackets in the tracks. Fasten your shelves to the brackets. 

If the idea of using tracks sounds too hard and unfriendly, you may want to consider hanging your wall shelves with wooden brackets. These brackets come in many styles, from very ornate to clean and simple. With the rising cost of wood, these brackets can be quite expensive. You will need a set of brackets and a wooden or melamine board for each shelf you want to hang. In addition, you will need drywall screws and anchors or a wall stud to screw in to. Do not attempt to hang these shelves without securing them promptly. Even though they may stay on the wall at first, the weight of the items on the shelves can cause the brackets to come out of the wall. Measure down from the ceiling and then measure again coming up from the floor to be sure you are hanging each set of brackets at the proper height. Ceilings and floors can be crooked and you will want your shelves to hang levelly on the wall. Install your brackets and then screw the shelves to the brackets. 

Finally, if you have a narrow space to fill, you can literally build your shelves into the walls. Measure the width of the wall and cut boards to that width for your shelving. Next, cut two wooden braces that are the width of the shelving board and an additional brace the length of the board.  Screw the braces into the wall. Remember to use anchors if you are not able to hit studs with your screws. Make sure your braces are level and lay your shelves across the braces. You should screw your shelves into the braces for additional security. 

No matter which method you choose to secure your shelves, make sure you follow the above instructions as well as any manufacturer suggestions. This way, you can use your new wall shelves with confidence.
