If the interior or exterior of your home includes concrete surfaces, you may want to clean these areas occasionally to get rid of stains or accumulated dirt. This job is not hard to do after you get organized and know what you¡¯re doing.
Lets start outside with the sidewalk or the driveway. Take a garden hose and wet these areas down until they very damp. Then sprinkle a fair amount of powdered laundry detergent over the driveway or sidewalk. Use a hard bristled broom and scrub it thoroughly. Now take your garden hose and rinse it off. If it has any stains, such as oil leaks from parked cars or rust, you will need to go to a hardware store and ask the sales assistant to recommend a product for your particular stain.
To clean the bottom part of your house that is block, the best way is by power washing it. This will do a great job and will save you time over washing it by hand. If you don¡¯t have a power washer, you can rent them at a tool rental or supply center. These shops also have many kinds of cleaning solutions for just about any household job.
When you finish cleaning the block and it is dry, you may want to paint it because the weather or your climate may start wearing on the unpainted block and cause your basement to leak. Before you paint the block, you will want to apply a generous coat of block filler to make this area look better. The filler will level the face of the block so that when you paint it, you will be left with a smoother, more washable surface. But if you have new concrete block or have recently cleaned it, buy a clear sealer to put on instead. The best way to put this on is to use a pressurized sprayer. You will be able to buy everything you need from a hardware or home supply store. If you choose paint, you might want to use the waterproof type. You will need a rough surface roller or a big brush to apply it. Make sure you use the proper safety equipment when using chemicals like paint and sealer. Read the labels to see if it can come in contact with your skin.
When you are inside working and a lot of water can¡¯t be used, use a brush to scrub the block with a heavy duty cleaner. Then use a terry cleaning cloth to dry it. If it is painted already, clean it as you would any painted wall. When you are done cleaning the walls and the floor, remove any dirty water from the floor. You can use a mop or a squeegee and a dustpan, or a wet vacuum if you have one. Eliminate all the dirty water so you don¡¯t track it through the entire house.
Although concrete is a resistant, lasting surface, it still may need occasional cleaning and attention. Pick a warm day and start in the morning or wait until evening when working outdoors to avoid heat from the sun¡¯s attraction to concrete¡¯s light color. Assemble your tools and get started for cleaner, fresher surface areas.
