Refrigerators have been part of our lifestyles for a hundred years or longer. A good one can last twenty years or more. In the old days, they did just that. Sadly, newer models seem prone to giving out or breaking down soon after the warranty expires. After one or two repair bills, you know it's probably more cost efficient to buy a new model. 

But before heading out to search for your next food keeper, here are some tips to keep in mind that may be able to help you make a good selection.

1. Don't buy hastily. Though few of us truly relish the appliance store shopping experience, it pays to take your time and do some comparison shopping before plunking down your money on a new refrigerator. Browse advertisements ahead of time, visit a few stores to check out their inventory, and compare features and prices before making your purchase. 

2. Thoroughly analyze a selected brand name. If you are thinking about buying a particular brand name refrigerator, visit the company's online Web site to learn more about their products and prices. Before you ever leave home you can find out which models are on sale, how much they cost, and which features they offer. Color, design, and style may be found at your fingertips, either at the Web site or in a print catalog. Do your homework before taking valuable time and travel to visit a store in person. You may want to check out Consumer Reports for information and ratings on your chosen model before you buy.

3. Check it out. When you have an idea of the model and brand name you want, visit the store to see it in person. Compare size, color, freezer capacity, quality of materials, warranty, and replacement parts as well as electricity costs to run the equipment for each model you are interested in. Remember to coordinate design and hue with other appliances in your kitchen. 

4. Ask for any available rebates, discounts, or upcoming sales to get the best possible price. If you don't need a new one right away, wait until the next sales event to get a better price. Or if you visit a small retail store, ask for a discount for paying cash up front. Some stores do this while others do not. 

5. Try it. Set up delivery with the store unless you have a way to pick up your new purchase. When you get it home, have a plan for disposing of the old one, and be sure to put a lock on the door or secure it in some fashion to prevent an unwary child from getting trapped inside, which has been known to happen. Set your new appliance in place and be sure it fits without jutting out or scraping the wall. Arrange your food inside to see if everything can be accommodated. Then decide within a day or two if you are dissatisfied with it for any reason, and contact the store within three days if you plan to return it for any reason. 

While a refrigerator may not be a terribly exciting item to buy, it is the principal means of storing and preserving fresh food for daily consumption. Treat your new equipment with respect, and it will take care of your food properly.
