With the stormy weather that's ravaging its way across the United States nowadays- devastating hurricanes, wicked tornadoes, devouring floods, and numbing snow blizzards, just to name a few- it's more important than ever to make sure that your house is storm proofed against these natural disasters. 

Generally, the interior of a house is comprised of a basement or crawl space; at least one story, if not two or three; and an attic. On the exterior, you can see the basement walls, the walls of the main living areas, the attic walls, and the roof. With all of these areas at risk, where is the best place to start storm proofing your house at? 

Start with the roof. Because most roofs are made of sheets of shingles, it is the most likely part of your house to be damaged by a storm. Shingles can easily be lifted and torn from your roof in the event of a hurricane or tornado, (depending on the region of the United States that you live in), or even by a winter storm that contains high powered, gusty winds. So you can begin storm proofing your house by inspecting the shingles on the roof of your house. Make sure they are in good condition and that they are fastened down securely. Most shingles come from the manufacturer with an strong adhesive on them. This adhesive, in conjunction with roofing nails, is what holds them in place.          

If you find loose shingles on your house roof, you can simply nail them back down. Rotted or damaged roofing should be replaced. If you live in Florida, you can purchase "storm proof shingles" that have passed a one hundred and ten mile power hour wind test. They have either a twenty year, forty year, or even a lifetime guarantee.       

If you find a lot of deterioration in your roof inspection, you might choose to replace the entire area. Depending on the region you live in, you may want to install "storm proof" shingles instead of standard ones. Check with your local building supply store for availability. 

Chances are that the attic area and the living areas are covered by the same type of material on the outside of your home. If the material is vinyl siding, then it's subject to wind damage as well as damage caused by objects flying into it. If the material is aluminum siding, then it's much more durable than its vinyl counterpart. However, aluminum siding is still subject to dents and dings caused by flying tree branches, et cetera, in a storm. There's not much you can do to actually storm proof the siding on your house except to make sure that it is fastened securely.  

While we're on the subject of side walls, one of the main place that needs storm proofed is your windows and your doors. Strong, insulated metal storm doors are essential for keeping out the effects of blizzards, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. If you have wooden exterior doors on your home, it would be to your advantage to replace them with insulated metal doors. 

Inspect the hinges on your storm doors and make sure they are tight. Also, inspect the weather stripping around the perimeter of these doors. Replace damaged or worn weather stripping to help prevent heat or cool air loss. 

If you have a patio door, there are storm doors on the market today for them too. Check your local home supply store for availability.   

The windows in your house should be energy efficient too. Short of replacing them, you can purchase sealing kits for them too. These kits, which contain sheets of clear plastic, tape, or cardboard strips and tacks, can be helpful in sealing out cold air drafts, snow, and more.     

And finally, inspect the basement of your home. There's not much you can do to storm proof your basement walls on the outside. But you can have the inner walls waterproofed if they leak during rainy seasons. You might consider installing a sump pump, too, if flooding is a problem that you often have.
