Choosing a flooring material may sound at first like something you could casually do while walking through a showroom. As you walk through that showroom, however, or that large, warehouse-like hardware store, it becomes apparent that your choices are varied, to say the very least. Tile, wood, linoleum, or carpet choices are just scratching the surface. For example, a wood floor choice will offer up many different types of wood, from oak or pine, interlocking or laid out, all in a multitude of textures and stains.
Yes, it has become apparent that this is no casual Saturday afternoon choice. This will take a little guidance, so read on!
When choosing your floor’s surface material, the most important factor will be the purpose of the room. For example, carpeting in a kitchen may not be very practical. Of course, if your heart is really set on it, there are surely work-arounds. However, the reality of spills and the advent of spare pieces of food involved in preparation may have you looking at linoleum once you start visualizing the mess involved in a slip with a shrimp scampi. Let’s use the kitchen for an example here. As apparent in the preceding sentences, carpet may not be on your list of possible floor coverings. Kitchens do well with surfaces which are relatively easy to clean, and also soft enough to absorb and minimize accidental droppage. A crystal bowl may actually survive a crash on a linoleum floor, yet wouldn’t stand a chance on a granite or marble surface. Linoleum has come a long way since your Grandma’s kitchen. Linoleum tile is relatively easy to install, and comes in a variety of colors and textures. Linoleum is also very easy to clean, and may be purchased with a permanent shine, or buffed look, eliminating the need for waxing. A quick search on the internet for ‘linoleum’ brings up a number of dealers and model kitchen designs. Another option to explore for your kitchen, as well as for any room in your house, is Pergo. Pergo is a synthetic material which almost identically resembles hardwood. Unlike hardwood, however, it is extremely easy to clean, and does not scratch or dent, as wood will. Hardwood in the kitchen is another favorite. The merits of hardwood should be mentioned, with the first being natural beauty. A hardwood floor can be very warm and inviting, as well as clean and spacious. Wood floors do require a certain level of care and maintenance, however, and when choosing wood, be sure and ask the sales person for care instructions for your particular type of wood floor.
In other rooms of your house, the same basic rules of thumb apply. While it is not unheard of to carpet a bathroom, it requires some consideration. Water which finds its way through o the bottom of your carpet may create mold and mildew, causing unpleasant odors.
Granite and marble floor surfaces add much to the elegance of your home. Be aware, however, of the hardness of the floor, as well as the porosity. Be sure and have granite floors treated and waterproofed. A spill on a granite floor may leave a stain from the liquid, which will disappear as the moisture evaporates.
Carpeting adds warmth to a room, and is a favorite in homes across the country. Carpeting is relatively easy to maintain, as well as extremely attractive, available in a wide variety of colors and textures. Carpeting is ideal for almost every room, other than those rooms in which spills are abundant, for example, kitchens and bathrooms.
In addition to the flooring materials already discussed, there are combinations of coverings which are popular, such as hardwood floors with throw rugs, or carpet remnants. Remnants are small pieces of carpet obtained from carpet warehouses for a reduced price. They are usually the extra piece of carpet left behind when a larger piece had been cut from a large roll. Carpet remnants and throw rugs are popular not only because of their price but because of the flexibility allowed in being able to change you décor simply by changing a piece of carpet!
Ceramic tile is another floor surface used in bathrooms and kitchens. This material, however, requires a skilled installer, preferably one familiar with the exact material being used. It is advisable to obtain an installer directly from the supplier of the material. They are usually most qualified to install their own material.
Use of a little imagination and some decorating magazines can help you on your quest for the floor covering for you. Ask for samples. Take them home and view the colors in the light where they will be installed. Floor covering is a commitment. Be prepared to enjoy it for more than a year or two, unless of course, you go with the throw rug option!
Whatever you choose let it be expressive of your own personal lifestyle. A floor is usually the last thing we consider, but as your selection process deepens, you may find your self with a growing respect for the floors of your house. They are as important as walls in putting your room’s ambiance together. |
