As every homeowner knows, yard work is a fact of life and having the right tools makes it easier. The more involved in landscaping you become, the more tools you need. But for basic yard work, here are the minimal tools you¡¯ll need:

Lawnmower. Lawnmowers, like cars, can be basic stripped down models or they can come with all the bells and whistles. Mowers can be electric or gas powered or they can be manual. Electric models require long cords and maybe even an extension cord. They¡¯re easy to start, however. Gas models will have a pull rope or an electric start. A mower that¡¯s self-propelled pulls itself and is easy to operate. Manual, or reel, mowers are propelled by you. They have to be pushed but they¡¯re earth friendly and, because they cut instead of tear the grass, your lawn will look like it¡¯s been manicured. And there are lawn tractors. Guys like riding around on lawn tractors but unless you have a huge lawn, a lawnmower is sufficient.

Rake. There is more than one kind of rake and you need two of them. A garden rake is for thick or wet leaves and debris that gets under shrubs. A spring-tine rake is flexible and is what you need for grass clipping and dry leaves. A short handled child¡¯s garden rake is useful for areas under shrubs that are too small for a standard size rake. 

Weed trimmer. Also called a weed whacker, this tool has a nylon line that spins at a high speed to cut weeds or grass and is either gas, electric, or cordless. Gas models are more heavy duty but they¡¯re also much heavier to carry. Electric models are lighter and can be used with ease by a small woman. They require a heavy duty extension cord. Cordless are rechargeable and will give you about an hour of power per charge. Use a weed trimmer to trim along sidewalks, driveways, and around the foundation of the house. If you¡¯re into doing things without power, there are hand-help manual trimmers that clip like shears. If you decide to go this route, plan on spending most of your day trimming. 

Wheel barrow or tarp. The grass clippings and piles of leaves have to get from the yard to wherever it is you get rid of them. Raking them onto a tarp and dragging the tarp to where you need it to be is one way to do this, and it¡¯s easy. A wheelbarrow won¡¯t hold as much as a tarp, but debris won¡¯t shift around and spill out along the way, as it sometimes does with a tarp. Wheelbarrows come in different sizes and weights, but the deep plastic models are easy to use.

Hose, spray attachments, and sprinkler. You may live in a climate where your lawn needs some amount of watering and attaching a sprinkler to the hose is an easy way to do it. You will need to attach a spray nozzle to the hose to clean grass off the bottom of the lawnmower after each use. Buy a good quality reinforced hose.

Pruning shears or pruning saw. The shears will be needed to trim shrubs, hedges and small branches. If you need to trim branches more than one inch in diameter, you¡¯ll need a pruning saw.

These are the basic tools for yard work, for a lawn. If you¡¯re going to add flower beds to your yard chores, another entire set of tools is needed. But if all you¡¯re going to be doing is the absolute minimum, these few things are all you need.
