Porch lighting doesn't have to be a bare light bulb or an all-weather floodlight any longer. With just few a materials and some spare time, you can turn your porch into a unique and elegant space, perfect for dinner parties, romantic drinks, or just relaxing in the evening air. Try these ideas out or be creative and choose your own theme or lighting!
Electric light: Installing track lighting can be a way to add versatile and movable light to your porch. Simply buy a track light and attach it to the ceiling of your porch or the upper outside wall of your house. Then wire it into the previous lamp fixture. Track lighting allows you to focus your light where you wish, illuminating a specific location or person. For dinner parties, light up the snack bar or buffet table. For casual night, keep the light diffused and relaxing. You can also experiment with different colored filters or moving lights to keep things interesting.
Candlelight: Nothing says romantic like candlelight, and with so many options for candles out there, there's no reason you can't find something that suits you. Try filling a candelabra or other candleholder with dozens of tea lights for a special evening, or invest in larger, more decorative candles. If wind is a problem, put the candles inside an old glass-walled lamp, which will not only protect the flames from being put out, but will reflect the light and spread it across the porch.
Antique lamps: If you'd rather avoid the risk of fire or open flame, you can use a fake candlelight bulb in any regular light bulb socket. With a flickering red wire designed to simulate the flickering of a candle, these light bulbs can add an element of romance to any electric lamp or fixture. Try combining these with old or antique lamps, including old lighthouse lamps or train conductor lamps. Placed on an end table or hanging from the ceiling, they can give your porch an older and more antiquated look.
Tropical Party: For a more tropical night, a few tiki torches scattered around your porch or patio can liven up any party or gathering. Simply affix the torches to the sides of your porch with twine or tape and make sure to keep children and flammable materials well away from them while they are burning. Four or five can provide enough illumination for a medium-sized party, without a harsh lighting detracting from the atmosphere. To get rid of flying pests, many larger scented candles come with built-in mosquito and insect repellent. With a citrus scent, they'll eliminate the problem of bugs without driving away your guests.
Hanging lamps: The wide variety of hanging lamps allows you to customize a patio or porch into any number of designs. Try oriental or Arabic print lamps for an exotic look, or even make your own paper lamp, taking squares of thick paper and designing them or cutting out silhouettes, then attaching them to a lamp frame. A large number of small lamps can also replace one or two larger lamps. Strings of tiny Chinese lamps are sold in a variety of stores, or you can pick out a number of medium-sized lamps and scatter them around the porch.
Elegant lamps: For a more elegant look, a white, round, paper lamp can add a modern touch to your porch. Paper lamps can be found in most design shops and furniture stores, and are a cheap way to light up your porch. Just make sure they are well-protected from rain and wind, as they will be ruined if they get wet. For an added effect, replace the light bulb inside the lamp with a coil of Christmas lights wrapped in a circle. Suddenly, the bright lamp will have a much softer glow, and it will appear to be filled with glowing points of light.
